White Sharks and Muskies

I just had the pleasure to tape and watch 2 shows on the discovery channel called "Air Jaws I" and "Air Jaws II". Not only was it the most incredible shark footage i have ever seen (over 1 ton sharks coming completely out of the water on a strike), but i couldnt help but see a similarity between them and Muskies. These researchers were trolling fake seals behind the boat (top waters) and got many great white sharks to strike them. Some came 100% out of the water while others came from the side or rear and crunched the "lure". Another thing. The airborn ones came while they were trolling along a breakline so the sharks could come from the bottom and gather speed. Ever see a muskie go vertical and knock your lure into the air? These sharks sent seals and fake ones flying as well. If you ever have the chance to watch these shows, do so! My wife thought i was crazy yelling "holy sh*#!" as these sharks rammed the seals and lures.[:0]

Wild show! Too bad they don't taste good like Makos...you could have a week long clam bake w/ one of those suckers on the spit! [:sun:]

No kidding! Some of those sharks were said to be 18' plus! Imagine seeing something like that go airborne after what you are trolling!!!!! Spongey, it would be more like a month long clam/shark bake.

That was the coolest show I have ever seen. And you're right- a saltwater alpha predator is the same as a freshwater alpha predator: COOL AS SH!T

I have three goals I set for myself in life:

A Muskie over 50#.
A Pope and Young Class Buck
A Great White or Mako on Muskie Tackle.

Two down, one to go........Big fish with huge teeth![]

Ok Stever! Let me know sometime + I'll check out the mako deal for this area; nephew graduated + is no longer in Va Beach but I can find out what's shaking....lots of bull, sand + dusky but may have to head to the Gulf Stream for mako, depends on how far the stream comes inland! Some yrs you can catch dolphin etc off the piers...I'll also try to get hold of the wifes cousin who is normally tight lipped, but a bucket of clams/oysters will get him gushing!

I also thought those programs were awesome. Could you imagine shortline trolling the foam seal and having a 2000 lb white shark miss the lure and land in the back of the boat?!

There's nothing like having a mid-40 inch musky clear the water like a Trident missile on the strike and miraculously still be hooked on the end of your line after splashdown. I have a photo I took in 1991 (by shear luck) of a 44" clearing the water in full vertical position with the lure stuck in the top jaw (definitely magazine cover material). [:)]

Have caught great white sharks on rod and line while working in Australia. Nothing near 3,000 lbs, but some pretty good ones for sure. I have definitely never caught a musky anywhere near the same size (and doubt that I or anyone else ever will). Also caught some nurse sharks too, but the great whites were the REAL thrill - especially since we were surf-fishing. Have seen 12 - 15 ft great whites chasing fish schools through gutters only about a ft or two deep with more of the shark up out of the water than in it. Often times when they were ready to return to deep water they would just thrash their way thru the sand bank rather than swimming through the gutter. They're a thrill to watch and an absolute blast to hook up with. Most of the times it's a LDR (long distance release) as the break you off before you can ever get them reeled in - thank the Good Lord!!
