I just bought a Lowrance HDS-8 to put in the front of my boat, but there is no extra wires to tie into for power, and I do not feel comfortable splicing into any of the existing wires that are already being used. I was told by the place I bought it from that all I have to do is run some 12 guage stranded wire back to the battery to, put the 3 amp fuse in-line on the positive wire close to the battery. Does this sound right? It sounds simple, and in the installation guide from Lowrance that is what it looks like I have to do. It looks like the yellow, blue, orange, and green wires are for networkong, so I will not need to do anything with these, but what about the yellow Accessory Wake Up line wire that is with the positive and negative power wires, do I need to do anything with it? Anyone have any experience wiring these up that can offer advice? Thanks for the help.

It should be that simple and that is all you have to do. You shouldn't need to use the yellow wake-up line unless you plan on installing structure scan or other ethernet accessories to your unit.

1 guage is way overkill. I think bfunk meant 10. I would solder it instead of butt splices if you can. Much better connection that resists corrosion which can lead to a reduction in current carrying capacity.
