Just wondered your thoughts for this, usually go on the full moon, definitely easier to see and fish under one. May have to go on the new this year though...

Thanks

I have never had much luck with a full moon and cloudless skies. I perfer a new moon or clouds to cover the full moon. I lose all confidence when there is a great big glowing moon above.

I've read Bucher and Gelb say they prefer the moon down. New moon sets at sunset, (Down for night fishing). Full moon rises at sunset, (up for night fishing).
I dont really care personaly. Go when you can. I've had good success during both periods, full, new, moon up, or down.
Just make sure your casting at moon rise/set instead of driving like alot of boats seem to.....

LOL!!  Am I only one who found this hilarious?  Maybe it's been too long of a day for me.

Good night...

Every lake is different, to some extent.

I've had multiple fish nights on full moon (with no clouds bright moon) and new moon on different waters. Particular lakes will be better under one conditon or the other.

That's why there are so many different opinions on which to fish.

I love to night fish and generally stay out until 10:30 -11:00 when up to north, and would stay later on clearer water lakes, or lakes with different fishing pressure.

I will say this from my experience fishing walleyes and stripers after dark, a high pressure system that has moved in with a full moon is still a high pressure system. There will be some movement with a high, and dark of the moon.

My vote is for New Moon .... I don't like to see the moon at all at night.

New moon for fish. For beauty and a few less fish, full moon. Nothing beats a full moon on a musky lake at 1AM. Especially when all the drunk people decide to go skinny dipping.

Fish bite fine on a full moon and a new moon. On the full you can see your follows and watch your figure 8 strikes. Had multiple 50" nights with a big full moon in the sky.

It seems night fishing s is at its best when the moon is like it is now being half ful or so because then it doesn't rise until later. I think the action at night is definately better before the moon comes up, but a lot of people also do good after the moon is up. Got a 45" five minutes before moonrise last night.

night fishing will produce muskies period. they loose all there fear at night because there the top of the chain and no fish stalks them at night. but research shows that all game, land and water are more and more active as the moon gets brighter

I get plenty of action during both periods. If I had to choose I would take the NEW MOON phase. But a light rain during the full moon phase can slo be a great night. Maybe even better than the new moon.

Weather can dictate what moon phase is best. I will take a FULL MOON phase with wind and rain over a nice new moon phase any time.

The darker the night the better the fishing in my opinion. Clear full moon nights are tuff to catch fish. More follows than hits.

When I night fished in Canada on my vacations, I found that the moon up/down was not very important to catching fish, but weather was. On the nights where the mosquitoes were chewing you a new one at sundown and dew was forming on everything just after sundown the fishing was usually better. The nights where the 'squitoes were almost nonexistant were usually poor. Don't know why, that's just the way it was. Maybe it means something?

Staying out until 10:30 is not night fishing "up north" - That's just getting to primetime.

for the last 5-6 yrs my cousin and I have been taking a week in aug on vilas county lakes, always during the full moon period. With no gps on the boat until this year it was easier to navigate,we would always fish after dark for at least a couple of hours, some nites alot longer. We would have at least one of those nites with lots of action, not all big fish but it was fun, either topwater or bucktails were the lures.I remember one nite when the clouds would go in front of the moon we had no action, when they past and the moon was bright we had action.Last summer we had no morning action because we were fishing too late at night,we always fished different lakes and have to trailer the boat. This year will be the muskie first outing in aug so no vilas county week, will hit vilas in the fall instead.
