anyone with a merc xr-series efi out there ???

i have a '94 175hp merc xr efi ... she's a thirst $%#% and pushes a 690. my comparisson is a 200hp vmax on a 620 which was a sipper compared to this thing.

any experience, ideas or condolences for me? one more year and it's gettin' thrown overboard unless i can make an improvement.

thanks ...

Toss it now and get a four stroke Yammie! The 225 Sport on there now sips compared to the VMAX. This thing is paying for itself in gas and oil.

Is the VMax bult on a big block?....back then Merc's up to 200hp were small blocks (which worked harder) and 225 and above were big blocks. I don't know if Yami's were that way.

The 98 200 carb'd XR we had on our Nitro was a pig. Same block size as your 175. As I understand it the EFI engines actually use more gas than the carb'd Merc engines. The 02 225EFI that was on our ProCraft didn't allow me to pass ANY gas stations...maybe it's because I was never easy on the throttle!!!!!

I'd go Opti or 4S if it were my money......4S if the holeshot was good enough. I just love how quiet the 4S motors are!

Just out of curiousity, what do you consider going through a lot of gas? In a full day of fishing, running and gunning all day, I would say I go through 10-12 gallons with my 1996 150 EFI on a 191DC Champion. (Not sure if that's an XR series or what.) Probably go through 4-7 in an evening depending how many long runs I'm making because I'm not moving fish and think they're on the other side of the lake!

He's comparing it against a motor he used to have on a different boat.

i don't think i'd make a whole day running and gunning and it's probably got a 30 gallon tank. also, yami doesn't make a 4-stroke 175 so i'm scratching my head. i'll run it through the season and probably make a power change next spring unless i can improve this.

WOW!~ would that get expensive unless your only fishing a few times here and there........get rid of that

I had a Malibu Flightcraft with a 200 EFI. It LOVED vast quantities of gasoline. I now have a 200 Opti on my X-190. My X-190 is lighter...but still the difference in fuel consumption is dramatic.

Simply put, I can't believe how much better the new motors are on gas.

Wow, where the heck are you fishing to burn that much fuel in a day?

I had a 95 merc 175 xri on a 690 and didn't come close to burning that much fuel. I could fish a long weekend (3) days hitting 4 to 5 lakes on one tank and still have some to spare. Granted these are Northern WI lakes being quite small, but come on.......30 gallons a day? Something is wrong with that motor.

I have a 1998 merc 175 efi pushing a 98 ranger 690vs, and I feel that this is a very good motor on gas. I fished the petewell musky challenge running and gunning all day from dam to the big water and only used six gallons of gas!!! You should get that motor checked out by a service tech!

4 hours out running a few spots = 10 gallons

the 30 gallons in a day is an estimate i'd rather not live through but i could see being screwed in this thing on a full day in canada which is why i'm trying to figure it out. your comparisson is a good one hodag ... i'm gonna take it in and have it looked at. something has got to be wrong on this thing.

Holy #*#* Jon. Something is wrong with that motor. But it could be as simple as an O2 sensor or something like that. The VMAX would last me three or four days on LSC running and gunning, and those are long, 15-20 minute runs, if not more. The Sport does me a week and a half fishing four to five days a week.

I'd say do the Suzi if you've got dealer support. Is that a 175 hull or is it 200?

Yami does make a 150 if it's a 175 hull. You'd not lose much speed, and your economy would be through the roof.

go with the suzuki DF175. Got one on my boat and it sips gas so it seems. But then again i am coming off of a 150 Johnson Faststrike carbed motor which you could hear swallow a gallon at a time when you would take off. Fished for about 8 hours on a small chain running back and forth and my needle barely moved with my suzi.

We are running two rigs both with EFI's. Once on plane we back off and can't complain about the mileage. The Opti-max run by a buddy of mine does get slightly better mileage than I do going slower speeds and he runs a pretty good pace. I ran my 225 on a 21' Triton for 6 trips on smaller up north lakes, and went to bring tank back to 1/2 with (non-oxygenated) and put 48$ in her and was over where I started. I'm happy with that average for sure. Having stop & wide open for speeds will suck gas. If you want mileage back off on the Hotfoot. Makes a huge difference.

even if you repowered it you will save on gas but look at the math...say you have to stick 10k after trading yours in on a new Suzi 175 which is probably on the low end..more like 11k, ok so lets figure 10k...let's just say you burn 30 gallons a weekend now, and use your boat every weekend from May thru Oct, that is 720 gallons...let's just say the Suzi cuts your gas bill in half which is probably an over estimate..still let's just say that...so you burn 360 gallons w/ the Suzi...you save about a $1000 a year...so it will take you over 10 yrs to recoup dumping the Merc....if you are going to keep a 1994 Hull for 10 more yrs????
just easy on the throttle of the merc...keep it at maybe 4k rpm and make sure you are running on all cylinders....I had no choice as my Merc blew but would I have done it without it blowing....the math didn't make sense ....does it to you ?

exactly bn ... question is how much trade value in the current one plus the kicker ... then whether or not something is going on with this one. i'm going to look at the obvious first ...

did you get an insurance kick for the blown merc or take the pill and get hurt on it? i figure my current motor and kicker have $4,500.00 in value as a swag, so might be closer to $11 or $12 on the buy so math isn't looking great.

10 years ... nah, i don't see that but i do see it going to one of my kids if i were to do something different which makes it a little different thought. heck, we can justify anything, right?

I totally agree with BN,
Sled, I'd have it looked at. Something doesn't make sense here, I have a 175 efi and actually for me it doesn't seem to be as bad as all the horror stories i've heard in the past about the efi's fuel consumption. Sure they smoke a little, but i like the smell.

1996 175 EFI here, it's good on gas on a loaded 690 provided I keep my hand out of it. Running around at 35-40mph and i think it's quite good on gas, usually fill every 3 weeks and I fish 3-5 days per week minimum with a lot of running and gunning.

Sled, no, insurance did not cover the blown merc.... you are probably looking at minimum 11k, probably 12k to get a Suzi put on....
i'd 1st check to make sure there is nothing wrong w/ your Merc,,,then maybe calculate out the MPG for a few times out...your gps has a trip meter on it you could reset to zero, fill up, and run it 50-75 miles and then fill it back up and see what you burned up for gas... i would think if you had it in the motors sweet spot it wouldn't eat 10 gallons for a short 4 hour trip...i believe that motor and that boat you would be getting around 2-2.5 mpg in the motors sweet spot....check it and see what you are getting

I have a 94 690 with a 175 xri I have the lowrance fuel meter on it. It get pretty good gph if u dont drive wide open. i have a 21 tempest plus a se sport hydro. 9.9 kicker. and 24 vt terrova full tank with 2 guys 55-57mph at 20-20.5 gph. if u kick it back to 3800-4000rmps u can get 8-11gph depending on conditions. at 4000 rpm My boat will run 40-42mph and get great gph. I would not go to a 4 stroke motor on that hull. the 175 xri only weights like 350lbs. Back then they did not put heavy 4 strokes on that boat not sure if it could handle it. plus there is no way a 4 stroke will run like the xri. I smoke boats all the time with bigger newer motors
