How many trebles do we need?

After reading the cut the hook post it made me think back to one of my releases this year. I ended up cutting all three trebles on a topwater that a fish absolutely t-boned. My question is this on a bait with three trebles on it, is the middle hook necessary? Have any of you fished these baits without the middle treble. I have already taken the middle treble off most of my six inch baits without noticing ony difference in hookups, but wonder if the bigger eight and ten inch baits will show a lower hooking percentage without the middle treble. I would like nothing better than to eliminate these hooks if my hooking percentage stays the same. Less hooks in the net or in their cheek = less chance for hook in Norm's hand. [;)]

I use alot of 2 hook models.
Undertakers only have 2 hooks, so do Cobbs under 8". I took the middle hook off of my HR Shakers that I bought because it was always getting tangled with the rear hook. When I buy unpainted Reef Hawgs, I eliminate the middle hook and move the front hook back about 3/4".
With larger lures, 8,9 and 10"ers, the hook spacing is such that I think you need a middle hook to ensure that you stick a fish that T-bones the lure.
