so i have never had to ship a rod before but the time has come for me to have to ship one back to st. croix for replacement. i have no idea where to get a tube for shipping purposes. it is still 7 feet long but has a crack that runs parallel to the rod. any ideas or suggestions? thanks so much everyone.

Location: Land of the Musky | You can buy a PVC tube with caps OR you can also make one out of a cardboard box. Make the cardboard box into a triangle and just keep duct taping the pieces together until you get the full length. Make sure you overlap the box parts so its strong. Wish you lived closer, I burn about 4-8 of those tubes a week. |

Location: Central WI | I went to a carpet store...they had a bunch of leftover heavy duty cardboard tubes that worked great for shipping rods. They are plenty long enough too...just cut them down to size. |

Location: syracuse indiana | also what james left out is use fed-ex no one else. i have gotten a lot of rods shipped here from james and they were pefect. but i sent a new rod to a auction winner and ups broke the rod and had to pay me for a new one and the one i shipped was brand new with tags on it. so go with fed-ex...bill |

Location: Land of the Musky | FedEx 100%. If they break a rod its no questions asked and insurance will pay out. UPS will NOT honor their insurance at all! SpeeDees will not either but they are so cheap it may be worth the risk with them. No to UPS though. I used to ship about $10k/year with UPS and now I ship maybe $250 a year with them due to their insurance "Scam" they got going. FedEx 100%!!!

Location: Palm Coast, FL | James, I just did a quote through Fed Ex for a 9' rod. The packaging makes the total length over 9'. The rate I get for exactly 9' is roughly $22. When you put in 9'1" the rate jumps to $74! Any ideas on how to ship a 9' rod plus tubing making it longer than 9'? |

Location: Land of the Musky | No. I do not burn PVC  The tubes I burn are made from cardboard. Funny thing is, my thesis from college was about burning tires but in a good way to make limonene (lemon fragrance), high grade carbon black and recycle the steel rings from them. I tried PVC in my pyrolysis reactor once and I must say it did not make anything that smelled like lemons! lol PVC is nasty stuff and its even nastier when you look at it with a mass spectrometer and realize the compounds you are dealing with! Most plastics are though. |

In short I lie. I shipped over 1000 rods last year and never got dinged once on length. They never measure lenght as long as you say it is like 103 inches or so. You also have to remember these shipping companies LOVE these long items becasue we pay an extra $10-$15 to ship them and everyone is hurting for profits right now so FedEx or other shipping companies are not about to push business away. JMO and what I do and it works for me.
