Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Just a little update on conidtions in the area around Morson.
Wsater temps have been steady at 64-65, but a little higher if the sun is out all day.
Spotters and scouts that have been doing some walleye and bass fishing have told me the weeds are looking quite good so far. Lake levels have come up some since the super low start to the year after ice out.
I am noticing a bit of algae already in our shallow bay, which is much earlier than the last couple of years when the weather was a lot colder on average to start the year.
Mayflies have started to show up the last couple of mornings and should be over and done with much earlier this year as well.
It could be an opener to remember for those of you coming up to fish it.
Only 12 more sleeps!!!

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Mayfly hatch was in force this morning. Definitely cover up your boats and turn out lights at night if you can. Nothing worse than grinding those things into the carpet or vinyl.
Water temps was 66-67 at the dock last night.
If you are praying Jimi, you could request that the rain slows down a bit....getting more than enough moisture lately and the lake is coming up nicely so a little drying up would be nice. The 14 day trend shows some sunshine and normal or above temps for the week leading up to our opener.
It's time to sharpen some hooks and troll out in the middle of the bay with a jake until the new spider wire ultra cast is down to the backing so I can crank it back on nice and tight!

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Water temps were in the 64-65 degree range on Sunday afternoon. Weather comditions have been relatively stable this week, but there is a chance of some rain showers and few storms tonight.
The algae bloom seems to be arriving much, much earlier this year. It has been pretty green in many areas around Morson and both directly east and west.
Nobody I talked to the last couple days can remember a bloom coming in this early.
Fishing report is that smallies are on the points..walleyes are up and down in the water column, northerns are active in the weeds where the water has come up over the cabbage and muskie season is not yet open so I'm sure nobody is casting muskie sized lures yet...right ???
Only 4 more sleeps!

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | All reports I received from people on the lake were a tough opener weekend. Water temps were 68-72 when the sun was out and shining on the shallow bays.
Actually had more reports of fish seen on shoreline and island related rock than weeds. Some fish seen in the weeds as well, but rock was more prevalent.
Mayflies are still hatching and leaving clumps and big slicks of them anywhere and everywhere. Algae is here and making some areas seem like Aug/Sept in terms of water clarity. Some areas better than others as usual depending on currents and wind direction.
Water levels are decent...it should look closer to "normal" for most people. Still raining here over the weekend and some in the forecast. No stable weather in sight. Expecting some tough catching days in general with possible flurries of activity with fronts moving in or wind directions changing.
Keep an eye on weather forecasts. Radar has been the most reliable lately. Some of the forecasts show one thing, and you see the opposite on radar. Radar has been winning those battles. |

| Justin, you could put the exact same description on our opener up in the Kenora area...except we have temps around 60-66 (sat-sun). It was a tough one. At sunset the fish were more aggressive, but still tough.
Also couldn't agree more about the radar. |

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Fish started to activate better this week after stable weather finally hit the area for a few days. from Monday on, the fish activity was strong. Several nice fish spotted and landed. Word from the dock was that weeds held bigger fish earlier in the week, with rock having the smaller average. By the end of the week, those reports had turned around.
Double 10s, spinner baits and topwaters seemed to be the most common report. A lot of action on walleye pattern stuff for one particular boat of our guests over a 2.5 day period.
Water temps were approaching 70 in the bays again, but the last couple of days has brought a mini-cold front. A couple of thunderboomers moved through last night and today as well so that could scatter things up a bit for a couple days.
Mayflies seem to be history and nobody is saying much about algae.
We had the same 33 inch muskie caught off our main gas dock two nights in a row this week. A very beat up looking fish. Must be using the crib and floating docks for cover and nipping at everything that might be a threat.
Midday period (after noon and into early evening) has been the best in terms of guests reports, although we have had very early risers around so far. One boat did have a 4 fish night in a few hours leading up to sunset and a little after.

| Just got back from Morson, Sabaskong Bay area yesterady.
Water temps were 72 everywhere i went. Fish were active in that they would follow up to the boat, but absolutely wouldn't bite the darn lure. Saw about 8 to 15 fish per day for 4 days of fishing. Only caught one, but it was 51 inches. I experienced fish to be active from early morning to about 10 am. Then it was dead until about 6 pm. Found fish on rocks and also weeds with rocks. Although the 51 came in a weedy bay close to open water at 7:30 am on Tuesday. |

| Thanks again to Justin-we stopped into Mylies to buy our licenses on Thur. We fished really not that hard Thursday am to Saturday pm. He gave us some good tips on where to start. We pulled 3 fish out of sloppy cabbage 37,41,and 42. By Saturday we stopped seeing/catching fish in the weeds and turned out attention to shallow rocks. Boated a 32 and 46 and as usual lost 3 more and saw many more. In fact I think Saturday night if you fished any shallow rocks before the rain/storm rolled in you were on fish. In fact one of our fish we ended up catching literally ate in the figure 8 after 30 figure 8s. Did spend some time on the eyes and the smallies- good action as well, but just not as fun as chasing the skis. mg spinnerbaits and spankybaits put all of our fish in the net.
