| Iam just getting in to Muskie fishing and Iam wondering if I could get some pointers on a few things. First what kind of line to use? Second what are some recomendations for setting drag and mechanical brake on bait casters i have not used them very much and iam not that familiar with them. |

| Matt, I just started to get into Musky fishing a little bit two seasons ago, and a little more seriously last year. My advice would be to pick up a couple of books that will help you: 1) Pro Tactics Muskie Fishing by Jack Burns - will give you a good overall understanding of what gear and lures to use and what they look like (lots of great pictures), and 2) Muskies on the Shield by Dick Pearson - tells you where to fish and how to think about Musky location and structure.
If you can at all afford to hire a guide on the water you will be fishing most. There is no substitute for seeing how a successful angler fishes the water you want to fish.

Location: Northern Wisconsin | I use 80 lb super braid on all my rods/reels, tried 65 lb braid when I first started but backlashes were bad and it broke quite easily. I have used power pro and cortland with no problems from either.
Set the drag as tight as it goes, if the fish makes a run at boat side and you need to let out line then use your thumb in free spool. I usually leave the brake pretty loose and just keep my thumb ready to avoid backlashes. |
