I have a 55lb powerdrive on the bow of my boat...if I put a 50lb trolling motor on my transom and use them in conjunction does that mean that I would then have the equivalent power of a 105lb thrust motor? I am trying to avoid buying a gas powered kicker motor for use on restricted HP lakes...thanks

If you run them off separate batteries then I think you'll be roughly equivalent.

Maybe someone with some more expertise on this can chime in.

Simply put, the way I understand how this stuff works, yes, you'll have the #s. But you won't have any sort of run time to speak of, especially when compared to a true 101# thrust motor, which would be 36v. You won't even be in the same ballpark in that regard.

What you could do is rig up two batteries to one of your trolling motors. That one you could run at higher speeds/power setting and get more run time. The two 12v batteries in that sense just become one bigger 12v battery.

On my old boat I had a 55lb PD AP that I used with a big deep cycle batt. It had 215 reserve cap minutes. On a night of walleye trolling (this is up current) I could get somewhere between 4-6 hours out of it, depending. That was running it usually between the 5 and the 8 on the little slider thing. However, this is also only going 1.1-1.4mph.

I have never seen this done(running in conjunction), and I cannot imagine any way shape or form that this would be anything but a pain in the hiny.

On the contrary, I have done it with a kicker motor and the bow mount, so there would be no reason as to why running two on two different batteries would be a pain.

If there is a way to tighten up the steering on the rear motor, that one just runs straight for power. Then...you use the bow mount to steer and increase power as you need it for forward movement.

If you really want to position the boat well on structure, and you have two guys in the boat, the boat can always be put in a great position as it pertains to working around structure, dealing with waves, etc.

If you run two separate batteries, I think it should work pretty darn well....

I do this on a few electric motor-only lakes. I've got a 24V Minnkota up front and a 12V on the transom. I normally only fire up both when I want to get from A to B in a hurry, but I'll also do it for trolling at 3+ MPH for 'skies. When I hook up, it's a bit more of a scramble to kill the stern motor first, then slow down the bow motor, etc.

Tighten down the turn nut on the stern motor and do all the steering from the bow. Works fine.

Back in the old days when the biggest trolling motor you could buy was an 18 lb Mercury Thruster I commonly ran my kicker to get along in the wind. I would suspect that this is similar to what you are trying to do. In general it works great, you use the bow mount to steer with, and the combination to power the boat. Biggest problem is when you want to stop or slow down as the rear end motor wants to keep pushing. Bet if you had a kill switch for the rear motor it would work better than you think.

Thanks guys for the replies...I think I'm gonna give it a try and see how it goes.it would be great in the wind that we are having lately to have some more power going across the lake or working into the wind...
