Subject: Musky Fishing Before Season Opener in MN

I know this is talked about all the time, but it seems guys are getting more bold each and every year.

I have a buddy that was out of Forest Lake the other night and he said several boats were out there clearly musky fishing. He saw guys doing figure 8 several times!!!

I am as big of a musky freak as the next guy, but I would never purposely target them prior to opener.

Makes me just shake my head that guys are out there "pike" fishing with Suicks and Double Cow Girls and doing figure 8's !!!

I seriously wonder if some people are too stupid to even realize that muskies don't open until the first Saturday in June each year in MN and think they open on the much hyped walleye and pike "fishing opener" ???

there are all kinds of people doing it...alot of kids or guys that dont care. there is no one out there to tell them they cant, i rarely see DNR on any of these lakes. they have been fishing muskie for weeks. sucks but no one is out there to say they cant. maybe a ticket or two will help the problem, but basically anything goes until DNR starts patrolling some of these lakes?????

Friend of mine has called the DNR twice about this and neither time did they show up. He doesn't bother trying to call anymore. If no one gets busted, people will keep doing it. Another reason to open Hybrid only lakes at pike opener to give these jackasses a place to go instead of "pike" fishing for spawning naturals.

Could easily be resolved by limting the size of the lure until musky opener say 5" or so.

It wouldn't matter much, people will still use the bigger baits anyway.

I've gone to avoiding muskie lakes before the opener because I get so frustrated with these law breakers.

Unfortunately game wardens can't do much about it. People claim they're "Pike" fishing and thats that. I am friends with a game warden and have talked to him many times about this subject. He says he cant do anything about it.

What about closing the Pike season until muskie opener? That would work.

I'll go ahead and ad my politically incorrect opinion...
Why not open the muskie season sooner? I've fished pre-spawn pike in Western states where it's always been legal, and the pike fishing is better than ever. Green Bay pre-spawn walleye fishing is huge, fishery better than ever. Bass fishing pre-spawn fish is common, again fishery better than ever. Apples and oranges? Maybe.

I used to guide walleyes hard in May in N.Wi, our best baits were big Rapalas and jig/redtails. We would boat about 20 muskies during the month of May. Average size, 30"-35", all males. We did catch the occasional 40"+ female but rarely. The females don't feed much before season opens. Why limit bait size or suggest closing pike fishing (limiting angling opportunities)?

I honestly believe we've gone too far with this whole thing. Let people fish. I am 100% CR on muskies, but c'mon. And, IMHO, fishing muskies in August is much more detrimental than fishing them in May.

For the record, I do not target muskies in May, never have. If it's illegal, it's illegal, and I won't risk my lively-hood to catch a 35" muskie. But to push for a bait size-limit or closing pike fishing is ridiculous. Open the season early and close it in August if the concern for the fish is an issue.

Let the bashing begin...:)

saw some guys "pike fishing on waconia last friday eve"
thought about harrassing them, chose not to, water temps are up
muskies spawned a log time ago no chance to hurt fish now. so i agree
maybe the season should open earlier in southern minnesota. 80 degree
plus water temps will be here this year. close it down in august, yup

Half don't know, half don't care, IMO. I agree with why the closed season exists, but... All I've ever caught around the opener were skinny beat up males. There are always going to be people who abuse the rules trying to catch muskies before they've seen any lures, but... They're probably not catching or harming the fish any more than the rest of us. I'll call the DNR when I see it, because it's pretty blatent -- if you're doing figure 8's? You ain't pike fishing. But I don't get worked up over it. Chances are the poeple doing it just plain don't know what they are doing. They may luck into a fish or two, but in the grand scheme of things? Let it go...

Only problem is southern MN only has 3 lakes. 3 lakes couldn't take that much pressure. If we had 15 or 20 then I would agree completly as ours were going through the motions in early april.(muskies this far south don't succesfully spawn) Guess with some ego is > than fish, sad.

It's against the law.

That's it.
