I wonder if it'll work with Powerpro or any other braided line? I won't let my son use Powerpro anymore because he gets some nasty b/lashes sometimes and all I can do is cut them out. Buying new line every couple weeks gets expensive!

I've done it with bass sized reels and mono. Never really had to do it with a musky reel. If you can pull on a loose loop to free up the knot, I still think that's faster, but if you get a really tight one, sometimes the thumb thing works. Can be a neat trick if you get a really tight, hard to pick apart backlash. Who here ever gets those things anyway...

I tried it last year and couldn't get it to work.Maybe someone will have better luck than I did?

I think picking it out by hand would be 10 times faster. I guess as a last resort it's worth a shot.
You pretty much got it. On some of those knots where the guy had to engage/disengage several times, I think it would have been easier to grab a loop and pull. The only times I've used it are when there aren't any loops easy enough to grab by hand. Haven't needed it yet on musky tackle.

backlashes can occur when the reel is not properly adjusted for the size/weight of the lure one is casting. This is a common problem with kids and someone like me who may change from casting a heavy lure to a lighter one using the same rod and reel. Adjust the reel properly for the lure and line should eliminate a lot of the backlashes. It's useful to show kids how to do it.
Line can make a difference too.
For some unknown reason, I don't have many backlashes since I switched to Cortland MasterBraid 80 lb line.

i hope muskiebob is just teasing doug j and not giving him real advice. i think the dougj - backlash comment might have been a joke. somebody told me he has been muskie fishing a few times. Maybe soon he will graduate from a spinning reel to a baitcasting set-up

A few years? He was an old vet, when I started Musky fishing Muskies in 64 on Sabaskong. Guy has to be a 100. LOL.

I just started muskie fishing this year with a bait caster (no previous experience). I have Powerpro braided line and this technique looks a little dubious to me... In my experience, the last thing you want to do is engage the reel and tighten the line down on the spool by reeling. I've found that getting it out while it's nice and loose is the least annoying.

I'm definitely not as expert at this muskie fishing thing as most of you. This technique as shown on the video may work fine for some of you, but I have an absolute certain way that I eliminate ALL backlashes!
I only have 15' of line on my spool. My casts tend to be quite short, but I don't worry about backlashes or casting farther than I can see!
The other secondary benefit is that when I buy a 100 yd. spool of line, I can get decades of use from it, before I have replace the spool!
I don't have enough line on my spool to do a figure 8, but there is more than enough line to do a figure 3.5!
Who says muskie fishing is too technical?

SVL obviously has a bit different tact. But my approach is to always have spare spool of 65lb PowerPro & filet knife in the boat. Problem solved in less than 5 minutes! Now if I get two (2) little overrun's in same day, I might have a slight problem.

I can't remember getting a backlash on my muskie reels. I'm using 65# power pro.
Don't ever smack your motor trying to throw under some trees or it could get ugly. I think I had to cut that one. I seldom get any bad ones anymore, but it will happen.
