Location: APPLETON, WI | I believe the standard for this bait is 3/0...? Not sure if anyone modifies them by using different size hooks.
I'd probably hesitate to use a different size in fear that the action of the bait would change for the worse... |

I'm not sure but the leftover one one of them is 1-7/8" long and looks like the gap is about 5/8 |

Location: APPLETON, WI | I actually bought a Havana Jackpot used... and maybe that's the issue. But I can say for certain the hooks on it are definitely not 5/0. Hmmm... looks like I'll need to put some new hooks on it.
Thanks for the info, you guys. |

Wow!
That is crazy! The size of those hooks would definitely make the lure sit a bit lower in the water and probably help with the hook-up percentage. I've yet to throw mine much but word on the street is - these baits are capable of seeing a lot of action, but right out of the box, they have a very low hook-up percentage.
Perhaps upgrading the hook size would help. |

Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | I have two of these I run a 6/0 on the front and a 7/0 on the back. The bait sits at a good angle at rest, starts right up and pushes water to the side. Haven't worked it hard enough to get the "pop" yet but I have other baits for that. Anyway hooks ups have been good, just touched up the paint & epoxied on one this winter. Good bait. I fished with a guy last year that only ran an 8/0 on the back. One treble, it looked good, kind of hopped as he did the retrieve. He was not working the rod much either. He said he has excellent hook ups and can almost work in in one spot. |

Could just but one that comes with the hooks in the right spot to begin with. Preferably 1 with 3 hooks even. And to go 1 step farther, you might as well get one that comes with higher quality hooks so you can go use your bait instead of changing hooks, size, placement etc constantly and testing...
Fish stick 3 good hooks eagle claw 774s
One eyed willy also 3 good hooks 774s again
Weagles have 3 hooks, but I'd swap them to eagle claws or VMCs
I wont throw any other WTDs than these, and gaurentee I'm not missing fish by not trying the other 17 on the market.
(Pretty simple concept. Left, right, left, right, hook the fish that eats it)
These 3 in my opinion do the best job of that. |
