@Tim, I got the skin on yours last night and I'm doing the eyes and the first epoxy coat tonight! Yours has the exact same eyes, only bigger to match the size of he lure. In case you haven't checked your email yet- I test casted it the other night in my pond and it swims like a champ! It hits bottom in my pond which is 6'. But, I can make it run shallower by holding the rod tip up- seems like it will be in the 5'-10' range that you wanted. I went with Western Red Cedar for yours because of it's buoyancy and it holds up well if a muskie should happen to punch a hole in it. It will have 5-6 coats of epoxy so hopefully that won't happen. I also sealed the cedar with sanding sealer. I'll post pictures when it's done.

It's a Western Red Cedar Blank, 12" long, uses 1.5" .092" stainless eye screws, has 6 coats of Diamond 2, taxidermy alligator eyes, and dives in the 5-10' range. It weighs right at 7oz. with three size 7 Mustad 3551 muskie trebles. Tim, I hope you have a big rod to throw this beast!

I appreciate the offer but the skin that I need is the actual skin off of the snake. The skin is removed and then tanned into leather. Shed skin won't work for what I'm doing.
thanks,

Location: South-Central VA | Finally got around to making more snake skin lures. The two in the 8" minnow body are from cedar. The are sealed with sanding sealer and use .092" stainless eyes screws, big stainless split rings, and size 3/0 3551 Mustad's. They also have taxidermy alligator eyes and sea snake skin. They are finished with 5 coats of Diamond II epoxy.
The big one in the bottom picture is an 8” in a baitfish style body. It is from maple and has all of the same hardware as the others. It is wrapped in python skin and has regular stick-on eyes. The little guy in that picture is one of my new body styles. It’s from cedar and has the same hardware as the others. Not sure what type skin it’s wrapped in…it was in the bargain bin!

Location: South-Central VA | Finished another snake skin. This is a big one! 12" cedar blank, 1.5" .092 stainless eye screws, 2x size 6 split rings, 7/0 3551 Mustad's, and a big whoppin' diving lip. Comes in at just over 7oz total. This will be a trolling lure. Sorry, no taxidermy eyes on this one- couldn't find any that looked good. Finished it with 7 coats of Diamond II epoxy- this stuff is WAAAAAYYYY better than Etex. It's much easier to apply because it's a medium build epoxy and it's noticeably clearer. I played around with the gills and I couldn't really find something I liked, hopefully it doesn't look too bad. I've casted it a few times and it seems to run great. Haven't had the time to troll with it yet.

Yep, that's pretty much how I do it. I don't like using too much paint on them because I like the skin to show as much as possible. I usually paint the bellies white and once in awhile I but gill plates on them.

Location: South-Central VA | Yep, they catch fish. The blanks are cedar so the lures have great a great wobble. The fish seem to really like the high contrast of light/dark with the cobra, python and sea snake skins. I've caught several nice largemouth on them when I test them in my ponds. I have guys using them for bass, striper, pike, and musky.

Location: South-Central VA | Finished up two more baits a few days ago and they are done curing! The first one is a shallow diving cobra that I did for a fellow on this forum. (not sure if he wants his name mentioned or not). The yellow python I did for Gerry Carroll, the maker of Gerry's Girls. The yellow python is also a shallow diver. The python skin is hard to find, very hard to wrap on a lure and it's also fairly expensive. Not my favorite stuff but it sure looks good!
Something new I've started doing on my last few batches is securing the lips with two stainless steel .062" pins in addition to epoxy. I've also gone to a slightly larger diving lip which has really enhanced the action. Seems to be working well so far.

Here's a few baits I finished up early this week- all small stuff. I did a bunch of different style lips on these just to see what they would do. I just did two patterns: what I call Black Goldfish and the other is a Fire Tiger/Perch. The Black Goldfish has gold glitter and gold stripes but they are hard to see in the pics. I have some 8" versions that just finished drying last night, I'll post some pic's of them in a day or two.

Here's the bigger versions. They are 8" in various configurations. The shallow diving Fire Tiger in the minnow body will probably stay in my arsenal. The others dive to about 8 feet and the two deep divers will hit the mid teens. Is it spring yet?!?

This first one is an 8" minnow body in a deep diving version. It will hit the mid teens. The second one is a 5" shad body in a deep diving version. It will hit 12-14 feet. There is a little bit of glitter in the first top coat on them that catches the sun nicely.

Location: South-Central VA | Thanks Gerry. I promised to show you some pictures of my new musky rod, so here they are. As you know, St Croix discontinued their Avid line of musky rods and blanks so I found an Avid Inshore model that works great. It's the 3SW80HF and I'm using it to throw your bucktails and some of my smaller crankbaits. I finally got out to fish yesterday so I took it along. I had an Abu Garcia 5500 C3 on it but I just bought a Curado 300DSV for it. I found that it throws small lures (1oz) very well and it will even handle some of my larger crankbaits (3.5oz). It's a sweet rod, I love the copper pearl paint! I used Gudebrod orange (I think it was #0221) without CP which allowed the blank color to bleed through resulting in very nice rust colored wraps. I used the Fuji Alconite guides with stainless frames and silver trim wraps to match.

I mainly do the python (natural skin, no paint), dark cobra, light cobra, and sea snake lures. I am doing the other exotic skins and hand painted skins upon request. I'm currently working on a batch of painted lures for a lady in MN but I have the bodies for my new skins just about ready to go. I'll post some pic's in the next couple of weeks.
I'm open to suggestions on what color eyes to put on the baits with these 3 new skins. I have some glass eye blanks so I can paint them any color.

I used regular python on one, the new silver metallic python on another, and the two little guys have cobra (brown) and sea snake (white) on them. They were fun to do, I've never put snake skin on anything other than the blanks I've made.
I haven't had much to post lately because I've been busy working on blanks. I have a bunch of stuff roughed out so I'm hoping to get some new ones done before I get too busy in June. Summer is coming fast!

I finally settled on names for them: Viper Minnow Sr (8", 3.5oz), Viper Minnow Jr (6", 2.6oz), Viper Shad Sr (8", 4.75oz), and Viper Shad Jr (5", 2.1oz). I've really only played around with one of the smaller lures with snake skin before I did this batch. I'm very pleased with how they came out, they have some great action to them. I prefer my lures to really have a wide wobble.

Location: South-Central VA | Thanks Dick. I talked with the gentleman I built them for and he's been doing very well on them. He just won a pike tournament (I don't think he was using them exclusively) and he caught his biggest fish on one.
I'm disappointed with myself for not making some extra python skin crankbaits in the smaller sizes for my own box. I think they'll do well on the river. The smaller sized lures in the 5-6" range seem to do well locally. I was out in the stormy weather on Saturday and had a 47-48" blow up on my Olive Minnow (pictured above) about 10 feet from the boat. She hit my line and leader 6" in front of the lure and I had her tangled up for about 2 second before she bit me off. She left me standing there with my heart pounding and my lure just floating there in the water. I was relieved that she swam off without a face full of hooks!

Location: South-Central VA | Took a couple of hours and got out for some fishing this evening. I've only been out 3 times this year and each time I've only spend an hour or two fishing. We've had so much rain here in central PA that most of our water hasn't been fishable for months. I was out for the first time last Saturday and had a 47-48" hit right at the boat but she hit in front of my lure and grabbed my line and leader. Fortunately, she never touched the lure and she swam off unharmed and I got my lure back. I was able to get out Wednesday and had a decent follow but nothing else. A storm rolled through last night dumping 4" of rain upstream. I didn't know about the rain until I got to the river today because it didn't rain at my house. Major disappointmen, it was high and muddy. My buddy and I decided to go anyway and I'm glad we did. I caught this one on the 3rd pass through the only spot we hit tonight. She was about 37.5". I didn't take the time to measure her very accurately, I kept her in the water and only took her out for pictures. I'm just glad I finally broke the ice after having chances each of the first two trips of the year.

Location: South-Central VA | I got in another bass/muskie float on the river today. My buddy and I weren't able to get on the water until 8:30 and being the first day of bass season, the river was packed! On top of that, the weather was bright and sunny so I didn't expect much for the day. We went straight to the hole where I missed the big muskie two weeks ago but there were 6 boats there. We made one float through and decided to move. We headed downriver and did some bass fishing the rest of the morning. Around 1:30 we came up on a good eddy that I hadn't fished much in the past. We worked down through the hole without any action but on the last cast I was planning on making, this one rushed out of the shallow water along the bank and hit the olive minnow I was throwing. I think this lure is going to be a hot one for me, it's the same one I used two weeks ago when I had the upper 40's fish on. The river is heavily pressured and most of the legal fish don't make it back in the water, so I feel blessed to have had action on every trip this year. Sorry for the bad picture, my buddy chopped her tail off...I need to send him to photography school.

Location: South-Central VA | This is a pair of lures that I built for Gerry Carrol who makes Gerry's Girls bucktails. I really like his baits because they are built super-durable and the blades spin the instant they hit the water. These lures are going to be gifts for friends of his so I can't mention any names until the guys have the lures in their hands. These lures are both 12" and are made from 1.25" cedar. A buddy of mine cut the lumber himself from a tree that was in his brother's yard. I used the usually 1.5" x .092" stainless eye screws, 3x split rings in size 7, and 7/0 3551 Mustads. The lures are wrapped in python skins that have been hand-painted to add a bit of color. I used red reptile eyes on one and a pair of gold/silver fish eyes on the other. I made the diving lips from 3/16" lexan. The lures were finished off with 10 coats of Diamond II epoxy. The finished weight with hooks is 14.8oz!

| Sure is pretty but at that weight I am sure it sinks. It it intended to be fished or for the wall? All that weight might be okay for a glider but a crank loses all it action if its too heavy. |

| Spent my $ on one of these and it didn't run correctly no matter what I did. |

Location: South-Central VA | "Guest", these are definitely meant to be fished. All of my crankbaits are built as floaters and these are quite buoyant. I swim test all of my lures to ensure that they run correctly.
I assume that you are the same guest that's making both replies. I'm not sure what happened to the lure you bought, but I'd appreciate the chance to make things right. If you're having problems with your bait, why don't you shoot me an email so I can take care of you. You can reach me at [email protected].

Location: South-Central VA | I just finished these Salmos up for DickMac2000. One more day to cure and they ship out! I really enjoy doing these little guys and the taxidermy eyes give them a great look.
This first little guy is from python skin and the second one is from a tan colored sea snake skin. The tan seas snakes are pretty rare but they look great on a lure.

Location: South-Central VA | Just finished up a couple more. One is staying here for a local guy and one is going to James at TI (along with a sea snake lure). I'm starting to play with the weighting in these guys a bit more. I'm moving it back farther towards the tail to give them a big, wide wobble. I think a tight wobble like a Rapala has its place but I've had more action on the stuff with a crazy wide wobble to it. I guess it looks more like a frantic baitfish.
Almost forgot to mention, these are from the hand-painted python skins I got awhile back. I also tried to new red eyes on James' lure.

Location: South-Central VA | Muskyslayer, Tigger, muskyspit: thanks for the compliments! MS and Tigger, I always enjoy seeing the work you guys do. Both of you have outstanding skills both with lure design and with the airbrush. Muskyspit, I'm looking forward to seeing some of your latest work. There are alot of guys on this forum that are encouraging and helpful, feel free to ask any questions.

Here's a couple I just finished up- some new stuff! The jitterbug actually came from one of my 8" minnow bodies. I cut about 1.25" off of the head and screwed the jitterbug bib on. I used 3 stainless screws that are 3/4" long to attach the bib. During testing I used 2 nickel screws that are 1/4" and I couldn't pull the bib off then. I know if won't come off now. It pushes a huge amount of water! I decided that I'm going to give it to a buddy of mine for his birthday. I've had several people ask me when I'm going to make a glider so I figured I'd better get this one done. It's from one of my 5.5" shad bodies but I didn't shape it and taper it head and tail like my crankbaits. I just ran it through the router table- quick and easy! I wanted something a little more natural looking on the jitterbug...not sure what it looks like but I like the pattern. I wanted something flashy for the glider so I went with black and silver underneath and some nice iridescent orange and yellow over top. I hand painted the eyes on the glider. They came out okay and I'm excited to try more.
thanks for looking,
jeremy

Location: South-Central VA | Glad you like them James. Throw the red-eyed Python when you get a chance. I weighted it differently so that it sinks and has a crazy-wide wobble. I think the toothy critters will like it.
thanks,
