Subject: Transducer Question

I mounted my new transducer and I have 2 problems.

1) I cannot get it just right so it doesn't create a rooster tail by dragging in the water ... how do I mount this dang thing correctly?

2) It doesn't read bottom correctly at high speeds

I assume the 2 problems are tied together. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks - Midge

Hiya,

First of all, What brand transducer do you have? Depending on the design of the transducer, there may be different things that can be done to help minimize the tail and still get good reading...

Much of mounting the transducer is dependent on where you mount it too. So..if you can supply that as well, and on what kind of boat, others may be able to help as well.

If it is on an aluminum riveted hull, it very well could be that you have turbulent water running around it, which will disrupt the signal....

It's on a 1650 Crestliner Fishhawk.

I do have one of those plastic transducer mounting plates on the boat itself and the transducer mounted to the plactic chunk.

As always, Steve is dead-on. My simple, humble guess is that you've got it mounted too high up the V, or too high on the transom. Either way will pull it up and out of the water while on plane, which will give you a rooster tail and skew your high speed readings. Did you buy the unit new? If so, it should have come with instructions and they need to be closely followed. But it is common for guys to mount them too high up the V, which I know in Lowrance instructions is specifically addressed, complete with pics.
