| Looking for input on the top 10 lures a guy should buy to get out musky fishing. Would like to keep it between 3-400 dollars. Any and all input would be appreciated. |

get an assortment and you will be ready to fish all conditions. Visit a musky shop and ask what you should do, they will help. Any and all colors are good as long as it's black. |

| to me it would somewhat depend on what to suggest to the newbie if I knew where he was going to fish most of the time as say if it were Cave Run that would be different than Eagle...
so if the guest could chime back in and let us know where he is going to be doing his musky fishing that would be helpful at least to me on what to recommend.... |

| How many rods do you have? do you have one suited to jerk baits? If not, I wouldn't buy one right off the bat. Start with the basics, then go to more specialized rods if you like.
As a beginner, you can throw both crank baits and spinner baits with the same rods. You can also cast many top water (surface) lures with that rod. Start there.
There are lots of good spinner baits. I like the Mepps Magnum Muskie Killers for summer. You can go with either single or tandem tails. Silver and gold blades are my favorites. Also the Mepps Giant Killer is a good choice for a willow leaf blade: it runs a bit deeper. I wouldn't go bigger than this to start. You want to catch a lot of fish. Don't worry about a 50 pounder for now.
Crankbaits: there are many good ones. Except for a 9" Grandma to cast in the fall, I wouldn't go bigger than 8" on any lure.
For shallow water, the 6" Grandma or Jake are nice, but I have to downsize the hooks on the Jake to get desired action. The 7" Grandma is a really nice casting lure. Also the 5.5" or 6.5" Wileys are excellent--both to troll and to cast.
For mid-depth, I like the 6", 7", or even 8" Believer. It is almost fool proof. And it also trolls well.
To go deep, I use the Bucher Depth Raider, jointed or straight. Both 6" and 8". But there are lost of choices out there.
Surface baits: The Bucher Top Raider has a good record and is easy to use. If your rod can handle it, I would add any good walk-the-dog bait. I use the Baby Doc, but there are lots of them.
Color? The rule I would follow is natural patters in clear water (to start); and a little funkier colors in dark water (to start). Firetiger is funky. Don't go to extremes. But you have to be flexible, if one thing doesn't work, try another.
A good discussion of lures is set forth in Saric and Heiting's book on Musky Hunting. I forget the exact name, "Musky Hunter" perhaps.

Location: Eau Claire | You can always find some used baits to get more bang for your buck. Thats how I started and it helped me get to know what I liked to throw before I invested more pennies in something I didn't like. Just be aware that the action on prop baits may not be as good as a new one. If your fishing with someone who is already set up you can always ask to try some of their baits (depending on how attached they are to them).

Manta
Depth Raider - jointed
Shallow Raider
Hellhound
Regular Bulldog
Grandma
Weagle
Single Blade Bucktails, there's tons to choose from
-All but 2 of these can be bought new for under $20
Don't forget that tools, line, leaders can be pricey too!

Out of curiosity, how did you arrive at that price...? (I didn't read every reply...sorry) Local sporting goods store? A particular internet vendor? eBay?
If you've got a place close by convenient enough to where you live, by all means... but if you're shopping online, there are 1-2 Internet vendors that will easily beat all others for pricing (and shipping and handling)
