| Interesting and had to run up there to take a look. I have fished Cave out of the banks before and I like it when it is 2-4 feet, because I pretty much understand what I am fishing and where the fish will likely be. Looking at the picture you can immediately see the problem and opportunity with the higher water levels up there currently. This is taken right off the landing at Scotts, and as you can see here is what is basically the same structure as an isolated weedbed placed on/near the dropoff to deeper water. Good spot, or, well it could be if there were enough muskies to fill every spot. Unfortunately there are probably about 200 of these spots for every mile of shoreline and there are currently quite a few miles of shoreline. Water quality in behind the marina was pretty good, and around the main lower body of the lake, however, turning the corner to Zilpo the quality and color deteriorated quickly into a muddier mix. The precip up there was similar to Green last week, one day with a couple inches and then another day with over 4, total around 7 inches in two days, and from the charts, another 2 inches fell sometime on the day I fished up there, WED pm. I knew it was a bad sign when there were two guides in there TROLLING, not casting. Of course trolling ought to be outlawed for musky but since it isn't, so be it. Nobody I talked to was doing any good. There were only a couple of rigs in the whole parking lot and that is 1/2 of the only two landings currently usable on the lake. Wanted to get some leaders and some other stuff, but missed my chance, hitting Crash Landing on the way out, but it was locked up tighter than a drum with no sign of life. Shoulda got some at the place across from the ramp.
This deal would be a fun problem to solve if one had the time. I am suspicious there are lots of muskies in the foliage, however, the only fish I actually saw in the foliage were scattered threadfin shad. Usually I would expect to see panfish, bass and some gar and carp cruising a little, but it was very dead. I would expect most of the musky population to come to the shoreline or suspend as time goes on with the flooded condition. Weedbeds are probably too deep, and too murky, to get a lot of use over most of the lake until it settles down some. Water temps were great, in the mid 60's, and eventually the water temps and visibility will impact them and I would expect there will be some nice fish caught along the edges of the foliage. The bite in the bushes is pretty fun if you have ever done it. Might try again tomorrow when I have more time. Covered a mile or two of shoreline the day I was there and moved nothing. I usually use something fairly turbulent for this, or some kind of blade bait. No gliders. Good place to have 3 people casting if you can find that many to fish. Good luck if you get out there. The fish ought to be nice and white if you catch one.
