Worst Bait

How about a new twist on baits.

What's the worst bait you ever bought.

Probably the second or third year I fished I was at a local baitshop and saw a bait called a "Musky Runner". They didn't look too bad. Kind of a wide flat head with a narrow body. Figured they may work OK cause they generally looked like a panfish. Anyway ended up buying one green one and one red with yellow belly for my partner. Talk about wasted money. The came in like the 2x4 they were made out of. I ended up dismantling mine for parts. My buddy on the other hand took the hooks off so no one would get hurt and has it hanging from the ceiling at the house on Little Saint. He also uses every opprotunity to rub it in about the awesome 'Runner' as we call it.

I know you have all bought some winners in your time. Let's hear 'em.

Of all the uncertainties about musky fishing and how well we know them by experience there is one axiom; The Burmec B-1 is the number one bad bait. Of course I purchased two of them.[:sun:] [:sun:]

I would say the worst lures that I every spent money on were Lucky Strike Pikie Minnows. All that fancy little hardware to hold on the hooks and to hold the tail section to the main body.I think a pair of $2.99 cent throw away Sunglasses have stronger screws then the little mini ones that hold all the hardware together on Lucky Strike Pikies. It was bad enough that they came apart on 1.5 lb Bass, but they swelled up and all the paint craked off after about 10 minutes in the water and just catching weeds could almost straighten those real strong hooks.A Musky Lure made for catching Tadpol's.

I have several musky baits that were doomed from the start. My first dud was a wades wobbler top water,I used this lure for years and never even had a follow.[:((] One other that comes to mind is a smitty jerk bait,I can't seem to make it do anything! And then there are the pigs, wont go there![] Good Luck to all,Paul

If this question were asked in may I would have listed quite a few glide baits but I figured them out. I did buy two crankbaits at the chicago show with a spinner on the rear and they do not wobble at all even with the spinner removed. I consider them a jerkbait. They do as much as a wades wobbler and they work great.

Ok now for baits I like. I bought alot of gliders and some are great. Here they are:
1) Vipers. WOW!
2) Mantas. Great and work at many different paces.
3) Slip slider
4) Cobb's. Love them
5) Undertakers. Finally figured it out and I love them.
6) Wades glider. Thought it was a side to side but comes forward with a nice flash and roll.
7) Zig-zag bait. It has a side to side dart which is a little different than the rest.
8)Hellraiser wood tick. Kicks out to one side or comes at you with a flash and roll. Kind of neat.

I heard from a couple a guys that they did well with the Burmek B1 and I still wonder if they were joking. The lure sucks bigtime!!!!

I knew the pigs would come up. I think you guys are being hard on them (the originals that is, not the suspenders). Granted the pig needs to be worked pretty hard to get down but they move fish when they are active. That being said, i am not saying pigs are the best lures out there. But there are worse.[;)]

Any one out there ever catch a ski on a Sloppy Pig? Has all the action of a miniature surf board with
a custom paint job.

That's an easy one- Gotta be the Smitty's jerk bait Sponge Bob forked up (palmed off)in one of his incredible contests. He even paid good money (shipping) to get rid of it!!![:knockout:] Looks like a serious candidate for some lure surgery!!!![] Maybe a big a** buzz bait prop on it's a** would help the poor creature look edible to one of those toothy Muskies. The cotter pin hook hangers look sturdy enough!

Any "serious advice" on modifications to this "floating stick" would be greatly appreciated- headed for Canada Fly-in on 25th-so I need to resolve whether it stay's in the Muskie box or not.

must be all of these:
- floating 6" pig (couldn't even get it under the surface), perhaps the suspenders are better ones?
- bill lewis supertrap sinker (took one pike on a floating supertrap of 101cm)
- thin lizzie (aka flipper aka ace dolphin) 6"
- 4" swim whizz. never had one strike on it, the 6" ones are paintless by now
- creek chub pikey 12cm jointed (do they still sell it? the hardware is a joke)

I gotta put in a vote for the Burmek B-1 also.

The biggest dud of a lure I have is the black poodle and orange sweater. I thought for sure it was a good choice as to my success with the Mini-Twists in the same colors, but none the less. Not a strike. I think if I tie a red or yellow scarf onto it's tail, that might make it work. Whaddya think?[] [:0]

Hey whats all the puds about Burmeks.
They are great,Send all your Burmeks to Ben Remer! He loves them!I have seen the power of Burmeks.

You guys must be using them backwards or something. The fin has to stick out of the water when using them.If you troll the paint off of them and catch nothing, well that one was not good.Does not mean the next one wont be good!

Have some faith, its only caught 42 muskies in 50 years or so![]

Your #1 producing bait should be a Burmek.

Why no one uses them!

I don't know the name of the thing, but it looks like a hockey puck, and works about as well. Then, there is the 'Chucky Duck'. Wood bait, no paint. Looks like a really tiny rubberducky. This thing is so silly, they have to out a label on it that says "This is not a toy" ---hmmmm.[;)]

Its gotta be the burmek, I used it a ton with now success and they it broke hitting a dock. I turned the half i still have into a jig w/ a grub attached.

Divini, for me the sinking supertrap is the best lure on the market, although I've never tried for pike with it. Give it some time and use it as a jerkbait, or twitch it.

I by far think it's the PIG! However, the Burmek B-1 is close behind! I read something about the B-1 one time and had to pick one up, the next day it's hooks were off and I was teaching my little sister how to cast a baitcaster with it. Not a bad casting plug I might add!

LOL, good topic,

Why is the Burmek B1 so heavily bashed? I caught my largest walleye (7.5Ibs) w/in the first 10 casts with the bait...

Guys, if you would have seen Steve Worral work my suspending pig you all would rush out and buy one. No joke.

I bought a cherry bomb on clearance that does not do anything. I bought a couple of top-line tackle gliders that do even less.

Yo-zuri baits? They are great. Work with the wood tick. They do work.

zach, I tried it for two years now and not even one strike. I tried trolling it, casting it, jerking it while trolling, fishing it vertically, ... In natural colors, orange color (orange crawdad), electric gold, ... nothing, nada, zip, zutch, ...

but I'm not ready to give up on it. I'll try again and again until I catch a fish on it. But it seems to me that rattling baits are no longer good over here. I got not a single strike on rattling lures this year.

has anyone tried the bauer mikie glider? They sold it here for one year and it disappeared, just like the tekneek.
