| Just didn't have anything else to do on this sunny afternoon, but now my question is
do I spray Scotchguard on both, or just the Goretex?
The 10X, being nylon, kind of makes me wonder. It is SORTA water repellent(supposed to be)and pretty comfortable for less than all day or sideways
rains, but is it going to help it to spray it?
I am down on rainwear in general since I find with almost all rainwear, water comes down my neck and gets my chest, and eventually my belly wet, and wiping my glasses increases my wet clothes under the rain gear, and my casting form eventually
ends up in water running down my arms at both wrists, until I am pretty miserable.
Tuesday I fished in an all day rain, and cold front, and weather headed to a record low that night, and if I wasn't one of the toughest dogs in the pound, or the dumbest, Ida probably quit hunting. It wasn't really the dirt that made me break down and wash them, it was the smell, though, after one got used to it, you might find it somewhat comforting. They smelled like fishing.

| I would do both, but make sure you use the Spray-on and NOT the wash in, otherwise it will lose its breath-ability.
And to keep your neck from getting soaked, take a hand towel about 12" long, fold it over lengthwise a couple times, and place it on the back of your neck before putting your jacket on. Any waster that drips down from your hood will be caught and dried up in that towel so it doesn't run down your back.  | |

| Actually, I never have water run down my back. It runs down my throat, and I keep my cap on under the hood but it still finds a way. The towel is an interesting idea though, might work on the front too. Something to try. Thanks. | |

| FSF, you might try spraying the cuffs, inside and out. I kept getting soaked up to my knees in my insulated rain gear, and I couldn't figure out why until I realized that the cuffs were soaking up water. Like a sponge. I don't know what to do about the water running up to yout elbows, it happens to me too. Then when it's really stupid cold and you have neoprene gloves on the water runs down into the gloves, essentially back and forth between your hands and your arms.
I had to wash my nylon gear for the same reason as you, and believe me when I tell you there was nothing comfortable about thinking "what the _ STINKS?!" and realizing it was ME. I sparayed it all down prety well with Camp Dry, and then took a hose to it just to see -- it repels water like it did when it was new. I'm not sure how long it will last, but even if its only a day it will be one less cold wet day on the water. | |

| I think the scotchguard would help some even on the 10x. It is fine on the Gore-tex as well, as I've used it and/or Camp Dry, many times in the past, but I recently found this stuff called ReviveX and it actually seems to last longer on my Gore-tex stuff. The difference with the ReviveX stuff is that you wash your rain gear and then while it is still wet, take and spray the gear all down and then throw it in the dryer and then in an hour it is like new again. The bottle even tells you to apply it liberally to the cuffs, so that you don't have the soak up issue. One of the things I always disliked about the Camp Dry was the fact that it would have hang for about a day before it was dry, and where ever you hung it it would stink up the place. I found the ReviveX in a small local camping store, but I'd guess that some of the big chains might carry it if you look for it.

Why don't you just throw the stuff you have in the garbage. I know you got a good deal on the suits at the flea market in Richmond and even if you just toss them you won't be out more than a $20.00 bill. I really like the one with only one shoulder strap. Guess I'd look for a new set. Your Buddy in fishing and mentor to many other things! Doug Johnson | |

I understand Pheasants have the same difficulty.
That said, I have a set of 10X that's from 1990 during my stint with Skeeter. I wash them once a year, and treat liberally with Camp Dry. Works great! | |

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | I wash my Guidewear a couple times a year and the wrist cuffs still smell like they were made of second hand smelt. Oooooh, if that ain't fishin' nothin' is!
Once every other year I empty a spray can of Scotchguard over the entire suit after washing. It really makes it water repellant and that surely helps in keeping you dry and comfortable, except if you are trolling and then a small lake forms in your lap till it eventually finds a way in.
So, what soap do you guys use to do a good job on the Gore Tex? I've tried all the fancy stuff that is supposed to keep the water permeability intact, which it does, but it sure don't do much for the smell in the cuffs. | |

Location: Twin Cities | I had a set of Goretex pants and jacket that started to leak, I took it back to Cableas to return it when the man there informed me the only way that Goretex will leak is if there is a hole in the material (obvious) or if the pores in the material are clogged or dirty to the point it cant perform its duty. I said BS, but he gave me a free set of Gortex cleaning solution and a spray down after wash kit. My jakcet and pants went right back to working 100%. Not a drop gets through. The guy at cabelas asked if I fished much, as fish slim is one of the best ways to clog up the goretex pores. -- Nice to know. | |

Location: Passaic, NJ - Upper French River, ON | Had my gore tex start to leak in the seams. Sent it back to the manuf, wl gore in Maryland , they tested it and found it to leak. Got a new set coming in the mail and could not be hapopier with their customer service.
They told me to not use the wash in products for gore tex, even it it says it's for gore tex, and to only use the after wash spray, then cook it in the dryer.
Great customer service and they stand behind their warranty. | |

| Nikwax Wash followed by Tx Direct works great...back to smelling good, breathable and like new water repellance. normal wash soap will strip your waterproof coating from the fabric. | |
