| My 6500C4 has gotten progressively more noisy and progressively less smooth. It works, but it's grinding. I typically tear down my reels and clean them at least once a season, so it's not dirt or lack of lubrication. Something is just plain worn out. After 4 seasons I guess I can't complain. My question is this:
What needs replacing? I suspect the main drive gear and the (pinion?) gear that the spool shaft goes through are bad, but they don;t look worn out. I'd rather not ship the reel anywhere or pay someone to fix it, when I can easily change the parts myself. I'm just afraid of buying the parts and then finding out that wasn't what was wrong with it.
Any reel experts out there? |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | U will have to replace the pinion and main gears, for the grinding to stop. Also replace the worm gear pawl. So for $15.00 your reel will be OK
PS U can PM me I have the parts in stock

| Dude, check with ABU Garcia. they do have an upgrade program in which they will allow you to pay a certain amount(usually 45% of retail) for a new reel if yours is beyond repair. Or, they will repair yours to like new for a fee, that is usually fair enough. I'd presonally suggest switching the high speed gears out to 5.3:1 gears and that thing will last you a bit longer, unless you are using it soley for light lures or jerkbaits, where the speed is needed for pickup. |

| My 6500 lastest longer than my Calcutta or Curado. So I would say it is a decent reel. I upgraded to a Toro and no problems. See if you can repair it cheaply if not get a Toro. |
