I like solid black on overcast days. Black hair and black blades on bucktails in particular.

Yes, black is the ultimate muskie color anytime. But definetly on overcast skies and after dark, the black skirt black blade deal is hard to beat.

Black by far covers the gamut in terms of producing anytime anywhere. Flat out produces the best silhouette to fool a fish. While I have my own preferences at certain times for hot colors or black and hot mixes they never give the confidence I get when I need to reach down into the box for a new tool. You can always rely on black

Technically black is the absence of color. It absorbs all other "colors" of light therefore giving it the appearance to us as being black. It makes black more consistent across the spectrum of light you might have from day to day but there are situations when an orange surface bait will give a clearer profile than a black bait will but in other situations orange will blend in more. Black crosses all types of days...sunny, overcast, day, night, etc. but before I simply use black I will fine tune what I am throwing based on the conditions first and that more often than not leads me away from black. If sky conditions are constantly changing and I simply don't want to be changing baits every 3 minutes as the sun ducks behind clouds then I'll stick with black as it remains consistent.

Black is always the repaint of choice, if you have a bait you like, but are suspicious the color sucks.

But I wouldn't overthink it.

For me, black has been a good color for casting (jerkbaits mainly) but terrible and pretty much unproductive for trolling. I have NO clue why!

For my home area, Chautauqua lake, black has been consistently the best color in a shallow running casting bait. Have always liked black tails with silver plated or chartreuse blades, flat black, red throat jerk baits. Have met, known, many experienced musky fishermen, mainly casters, over the past 40 yrs. around here and black is overwhelmingly their 1st choice for color.

For open water trolling around here, natural finish baits seem to produce best. Perch, pike, golden shiner, silver flash, rainbow, (the old creek chub colors), are very good. My personal favorite for trolling is perch with a pale orange belly. If you're into trolling shallow over or along weed lines with say spinner baits, or jerk baits, IMO, cant go wrong with black.

Funny for years my favorite jackpots were spook and blue shad. I've been wanting that blue shad color pattern in a heavy slosher type WTD for a while now.

One more thing... I am a firm believer that color is the least important factor- to the fish at least.

If that's the case, then you must only have one color in your tackle box. Why bother buying more than one color of any bait if color is the least important factor and of little consequence? What's the most important factor, John? Bait size? Action? I'm perplexed.

When all else fails throw black!

When someone tells you they have a secret bait you know it's got to be black.

Good Fishing,
Scott M.

P.S. Take a variety of black baits on your next trip.

Guest:

The most important factor in my opinion is location. And no I don't have only one color bait in my tacklebox... I just voiced my opinion that color is the least important factor in catching muskies. If you believe otherwise that is your opinion- which you are entitled to.

PSYS,
I also feel color is not the most important factor when considered the way most Muskie anglers look at it.

Black is always visible, and is, as such, always effective.

Since color defines contrast and contrast defines how well the fish sees the lure, however, I look to offer the most contrast possible, therefore opting for the old axiom 'dark day, dark lure, light day, light lure' unless fishing jigs.

If you look in my tackle box, you will see most of my favorites have black somewhere in the pattern.
