| Weeds are very heavy on all of the Kawarthas this year due to the high water in the spring, and the mild winter with minimal ice coverage. The bigger fish seem to be struggling to stay in the thick stuff, and appear to more edge oriented. Water levels are seasonal (much better than last year), and the temps are also good. We've had some good cool nights over the past week, which should moderate the water temperatures and get some of the bigger fish moving.
As the cool nights continue, more fish will start orienting to the rocks, but in the meantime work the weed edges... the more defined the edge (especially if there is deeper water nearby), the better!
If you want big fish, you must find the transition zones... these are the areas where multiple bottom types connect. Alternatively, you can take your chances trolling the open water areas. This is a hit and miss proposition, but it is likely your best chance at a big fish.
I've had best success on Pigeon in the early morning and late afternoon / evening... especially on the weekends. Even if the fish are shallow, with all of the boat traffic and jet skis, they tend to be pretty inactive. Bucktails and crankbaits at each end of the day (top waters if you are game), stick with jerkbaits during the day for casting.
