Location: Lockport, IL | This was posted on another fishing forum. How would you respond to this? I have a limited knowledge of fisheries and the biology involved in a healthy lake and wanted to hear from some more studied and informed individuals on this topic.
"Muskies do well in large lakes and flowages. They are not meant to be in small lakes under 1000 acres. They are an eating machine. I've fished bass tournaments for years. I've caught over 50 muskies, all by accident. When they were coughing up a fish it was usually a walleye and sometimes bass, and Im not talking about fry. I'm talking 12-15 inchers."
The lake he is referring to is a small private lake that has tons of gizzard shad up to 14" and quite a few carp in it. |

Location: Lockport, IL | Thanks for the input. That is why I came here first. Originally I got fired up when I read this and wanted to take a little time before responding if I indeed was going to respond. Your right, getting into it with this guy will only cause a headache and it probably wouldn't have any impact on his beliefs about the "eating machine" that is the musky.

| Full of BS.
#1 He has not caught over 50 muskies.
#2. If he had, he would realize, muskies rarely "cough up" anything.
#3. Muskies do great in small lakes, makes it easier for them to catch and eat bass and walleyes, helping to round out their rough fish diet.

| Rainman, how many have you caught in this lake? What I would have said is, "I have caught x number, not one of them has coughed up a bass or a walleye" I would have just added that i have seen them feed on shad and seen their tails sticking out of their throats when I caught them, the shad eating machines that they are.

| I fished small lakes the last 2 yrs. These lakes all had a good perch, crappies, and bass in them. Alot of bass fishermen fish these lakes and catch alot of muskies. Have not heard any of them complain about muskies eating the bass. |

| Just tell him muskies eat all the weak slow ones just like any other predator, and that the remaining gamefish are healthier and grow to a larger size because of it. |

Location: Davenport, IA | There are a lot of bass fishermen who talk like this in Illinois and Iowa. The reality is that they greatly exaggerate about the number of muskies they are catching. There has been thousands of muskies caught among the people reading this. Have any of you seen a muskie cough up a 15" walleye or bass? |
