Someone mentioned this unit to me the other day and i can't seem to find any information about it? All i see is HDS-5 (x,m)? Are these different units? I know the HD-5 they were referring to was a color graph. Is the HD-5 the same except it doesn't allow for any GPS, mapping chips, etc?

also - with the HDS 5 -what is the difference it and the 5x or 5m?

lastly- anyone using the HDS-5 in Wisconsin with the Lakemaster maps- do you like it?

I know alot of questions, but that is why i love this site! I always get my questions answered by someone.

All the HDS units are color. The HDS-5x is just a sonar unit itself, the HDS-5m is just the gps unit and the HDS-5 is a sonar/gps unit combo.

I haven't used the Lakemaster chips personally, but have used the Navionics chips in the HDS a few times and what a difference the HDS units are compared to the older LCX units.

You can find all the information you need about the HDS units here:

Thanks for clarifying TJ...it now makes sense to me. When looking at price it seems that going with the HDS-5 vs. the HDS-5x is only about $200 more w/o the expensive structure scan, and seems like alot of bang for the buck?

If i did go with the HDS-5x, could i convert it to the HDS-5 at a later date?

Also- Lakemaster appears to have 2 options for WI maps right now. LakeMaster and LakeMaster Insight. Insight is about double the price- is it worth the extra $- what does it have- more 3-d and color contours?

If it were me buying and I may want a gps in the near future, I'd definitely spend the extra and get the HDS-5, the sonar/gps combo. You can't add a gps to the HDS-5x, it's only a sonar.

So to answer your question, you cannot convert anything at a later date, you'd have to buy the HDS-5m if you wanted the gps then.

I'm not familiar with the Lakemaster chips, so I can't help you there.

The difference Lake Master insight chip shows 3d when zoomed out over the water. It is kind of nice for seeing structure as a person motors along. If using the 3d chip a user will need to run north up to get the proper 3d view. The regular lake master chip will have two color highlights. Darker blue for shallow water and lighter for deeper water.

I can't answer your question on Wisconsin lakes, but look at the lake master website and see which lakes you fish and which ones are on the list. On the lakes I use my lakemaster chips I am pleased. I have both the insight chip and the regular chip for Minnesota and Ontario.
