Deep Diving Glide Baits??

Well.... obviously I'm on a glide bait kick.. so how about this? What are your favorite deep running glide baits? I usually grab a Jerko when want to go slow and low... but what are some others... preferably with flat sides.

I'm looking for something that runs about 8 feet down with ease... as I'd like to try it over open water and around cisco. Just something a little different to offer them whem my crankbaits aren't gettin' the job done.

Thanks!!!!

If you tweek a suick it will go side to side like a jerko and deep. I have a couple that will do that.

Twiching cranks is still the best way to get a side to side action deep.

I like the Bugsy Baits. Also another new one out that's worth a second look is either the Bandit or Outlaw by Muskie Trapp Lures.

The deepest one I have found is the 8" HR shaker. Another one is made by widowmaker and it's not the deadhead, it's the other one. These two seem to have the least amount of rise when worked.

I have to second Todd Ms choice of the Hughes River shaker 8" drop belly. It sinks evenly -maintains depth fairly good and has an action that triggers big fish. There is only one way to work the bait and that method is apparent immediately.

I guess you have to separate the lure builder from the lure in this case. Ive got 37 Muskies on this bait this year so far (clients - not me )and it has become my go to bait.

I fish clear water systems and want an erratic , but easy to find target, at depth. This lure does it in spades.

I like the Eat Me Brand Lures "Softy" gilde bait. It has got a screw on weight and it goes pretty deep and has some good action.

8" HR Shaker for sure. Count it down and start workin' it. Stays where ya want it, and easy to work.

Hands Down the old Stalker deep diving glide or pull-bait (not made in close to 10yrs) I still have five left, three 10" and two 6" the big goes 10ft easy and the smaller one runs at least 6ft, anyone remember these? Come Roy start making them again![;)]

Chuck,
You hit the nail on the head. The Stalker was one of our favorite jerkbaits in the mid-late '80s for suspended muskies. While I don't have any of the originals left, I did make an oversized one out of pine. This lure still produces and has put some nice fish in the boat.

Hmmmm... lots of good ideas/recommendations. The pull bait suggestion of Chucks is a good one (too bad I sold ALL of my old Stalkers) but I'm specifically targeting deep running "walk the dog" glide baits.

I think the 8 inch Hughes Shaker is exactly what I'm looking for.... but I just can't bring myself to drop that kind of coin, take that kind of risk waiting to get it, and spend even more time looking for someone who has the color I want in stock.

Are there any good Hughes River Shaker knock-offs out there? Are the Amma Bammas back in production? I could surely weight one myself to do the job. Anyone try Crash Mullin's glider that looks similar to the Shaker?

The blitzen shad is nice but does not stay deep when you work it like a shaker. You might want to try a wyde glide too but they do not run as deep either. Like you said if you know how to weight them then it won't be a problem.

By the way, that widowmaker glider I mentioned is a 10" cigar shaped glide bait and priced very resonable.

Todd, is that a new one? I have two deadhead gliders but those don't run deep. I make a shaker-copy of 8" that runs pretty deep but it's thinner (slightly under 1" thick) so lighter than the original one.

I think you're looking for a shad-shaped glider. The round ones or cigar-shaped ones tend to come up faster than the flatsided ones.

best bait to get really deep is a weighted 10" suick, a big daddy

Jason

I think by 'Crashs' bait your refering to the dancin shad and it dosent run that deep but has a nice action,,slow to work though,,HR shakers are not risky to buy if you get them retail,,Mouldys has them,Reeds too,,there worth the $40,,if you were a sucker fishermen how much would that cost you for a one time bait over and over,,thats how I jusify it

has anybody tried the rizzo deep diving pullbait or the L&L exciter?

rizzo pullbaits do go deep, esp. the smaller one- the action is kinda "do nuthin" style, looks like easy prey - just pull it in different rhythms, not the same cadence.

divani
I love the L&L exciter caught more fish on that bait than any other over the years. Have not bought any since Dick Moore started making them though. Still have 2 in the package from when they first came out.

The original owner and manufacturer of the L&L Exciter was my high school science teacher.... Mike Lyga. In fact, I used to help him make those baits (cheap labor). I have caught many many fish on those baits too... yet don't have a single one in my box anymore (go figure). Good baits. Dick Moore hasn't changed a thing on them... so should STILL be a good bait.

I'm not asking for what are simply good baits that get down deep. I am looking for classic GLIDE baits that stay down low. IF I were to spend the cash on a Hughes Shaker.... where is the best RETAIL place for me to call? I'm still more inclined to buying a "knock off" and weighting it down myself.... cause all I'm really buying is the pretty paint job. Otherwise, I'd make my own.

So, whose got the best selection of Hughes Shakers AND the lowest price????

My choice does'nt have flat sides but works for me. It's the Smity Power Glide, sinks 1/2 a foot per second. My second choice would be a Jerko. Both have that great side to side action.

I have found putting a jb weight kit in a manta will make it run deep and you still get the nice side to side glide the manta has to offer. Other than that it seems some you can count down and will stay down. The phantom will do that, the undertaker just expierment. Some come up right away even after you count them down. gl jlong
