| Throws DBL 10's for me great! Hand hurts at the end of the day after using it but I like the way they pull, you can burn them pretty good! I only have the standard handle on mine and have used my buddy's power handle on his 400B and it pulled really nice! I'm sure a lot of people will agree with the power handle, seems to be the general consensus around here. But to stop my rambling, they throw great! |

All you need to know. I've got a 400b and I love it, but it's terrible w/ dbl 10's. I would go w/ a saltist if you're looking for a good dbl 10 reel at a good price. |

| I love my 400b, but a DCG reel it is not unless you get a paddle handle. |

Location: Kodiak, AK | I started out with 400B's. They work if you're not into burning. I was quite satisfied with mine. Still have one as a back up. I've since gone to TE's, even a 700 for blades though. |

| Calcutta B's are nice reels. I had a 400B and used it for jerbaits and topwater. Regardless if you put a power handle on this reel or not, you are not going to be able to burn a bucktail/DCG. This reel with a full spool of line is only going to being in about 24-25 inches of line per turn.
I think the word "burning" gets misinterpreted by many people. Having a reel like the 400B bringing in 25 inches of line per crank of the handle and having the person reel as fast at they can is not considered "burning." The baits might look like its coming to the boat fast and you and might feel it in your body like your really burning that bucktail, but in all reality, its not burning. If you are looking for a reel to burn bucktails, look at a Diawa Saltist 30 or 40 or a trinidad 14 or 16. With these reels you are looking at bringing in 35 inches per crank with the saltist 30 and over 40 inches per crank with the saltist 40 and mid to low 40 inches per crank with the Trinidads. These reels have the power to "burn" these baits and it won't kill your body. You will be doing a lot less work using a Saltist 30 compared to 400B and you will be bringing the bait in a lot faster. Once you get one of these reels and compare it someone else in your boat who is using a 400B or an ABU or something like that, you will really be able to tell what burning is. And who is working harder.
If your just looking for a reel to slow roll or reel medium speed for DCG's, the 400B would be an option. It would be better to get the Saltist 30, because you can still slow down your retreive to slow and medium speeds but you have the option to burn. Plus you save your self some coin. You can get the saltist all ready to rock full of #80 line for under $200.
Even the Calcutta TE 400 or TE 400 LJV isn't going to really burn DCG's. Again, these reels only bring in 25 inches of line per crank. I love my 400TE, but just not for burning. Its got the power and is a tank of a reel, but for DCG's there are better options out there. |

Location: Antioch, IL | Love my 400B, but not for double 10's. Yeah, it will do it, but as stated above there are better reels out there for that application. I use it for smaller bucktails and small-med. cranks. Doesn't pick up line fast enough for me to use it as a jerkbait or topwater reel. One note is to be careful with the power handles shimano offers for this reel (if it is still the same as the offered several years back. The grip is solid rubber and the size of a door knob. Feels very nice in the hand on the retrieve, but the weight of it can cause the reel to engage mid-cast. bad for the reel and if your caught off guard you could throw the whole rig in the drink. That said, I do love the power handle, just be careful. |
