Learn learn learn. This will be my 2nd season chasing muskies and it has taken over my life. I need to get out and pay attention to details. I would also love to get some people new to muskie fishing to catch a fish or two.

"With everyone at different points in their muskie career. "

Technically, very few us have a Musky 'career"---which is fishing for money, or at least guiding. For most of us it's just a hobby. This perspective helps keep my goals grounded, which are:

>Enjoy the outdoor experience in general, even if no fish are caught.
>Try to make some of the outings with family members.
>Not buy new lures until the "old" ones catch some fish. So that means learning to be better with the ones I already have.
>Finding a better balance between landing a hooked fish before she gets off vrs. not trying to boat when she's still too hot.
>Fish at least one new body of water.

Pointer,
Are there Sturgeon in Utah? How about Paddle Fish ?
Montana, has some really nice Paddle fish on the Yellowstone, and Utah should have a few of these prehistoric looking fish as well,........Or do they? Utah?

My goals are to fish more with my kids, friends, new friends, and boat more fish per hr fished than ever before.
It also would be nice to win a Tournament for once.

My first and most important goal to me in "my hobby" is to :
1. Have my son catch his first Muskie (priority number 1).
2. enjoy the time with family and friends fishing
3. catch some fish makes everything easier.
4. watch my son progress and break his personal best over and over through out his life (ok not a season goal but life long goal).
5. break my personal goal.
6. get one big enough to qualify for my standard for a replica for myself.
7. enjoy every chance I get on the water.

Things do change for people throught their "hobby" of musky fishing and come across different goals which is great. This year is about my son. He is 7 and acts like he is in the prime of his life with a 100 muskies under his belt. It is entertaining for me as I never knew that every cast he make he has some sort of fish following of mised a fish on each cast. I love his enthusiaum. Plus it is a great chance for he and I to spend some good time together. We are doing something that I personally can't wait for which is he is going to Canada this yea with my dad, brotherin-law and myself. It will be 3 generations in Canada on a number lake and looking forward to it.
As far as getting someone else involved in the sport. That is something I always enjoy. If the person I am taking out for the first time and they are dating someone or if they are married I joke with them about signing a agreement that I am not responsible for what may happen to the addiction of Musky fishing. It is just a little joke that some of the people and my dad have come up with when getting someone started with the uncurable disease (which is great).

Just get out there and enjoy the time with family and friend or parents. Ther is alwayssomething good to come out of the day that you can laugh about or say that is something I have never seen before. Life is too fast to not enjoy the time. Don't get me wrong a fish in the net, a shot of Blackberry Brandy, and high fives are always great but enjoy life and the time you spend with people you enjoy.

Sorry to disappoint you Jerome, but this is not Pointer

Neither sturgeon nor paddlefish in Utah. Our waters generally drain to the Great Basin; paddlefish are Mississippi drainage and sturgeon (depending upon species) are in drainages heading to the Atlantic or Pacific. But like you say, they're not all that far away.

Kevin, you're close by - maybe you can join me sometime this year

Last year was a great year, no doubt, but when I think back on it, there IS one thing I definitely want to work on. I want to remember that while I do take this sport seriously, when something goes wrong - like a brand new reel seizing up on me at the end of a cast in a high wind and the trolling motor battery is nearly dead - not get mad and curse the world. . . On another note, it's so easy to get caught up in LEARN, LEARN, LEARN, sometimes when the partner says, "Should we crack one open and celebrate quick?", it's okay to do just that - not open the beverage and let it sit on the casting deck until it's warm and undrinkable because you can't bear to miss out on THAT NEXT CAST.

Lastly, 2009 was great to me with numbers and a few biggies mixed in, but I keep telling myself to trade in some quantity for size quality and trophy hunt. I have to get my fix, though, so a little more equality between the two maybe.

Thanks guys. I'll come around begging at some point. My daughter will probably play upward of 20 golf tournaments this summer, so I'm going to be doing a lot of Dadding, but a time or two on the water would be nice. I'll bring the beverages and the sammitches.

Oh, and Joel. I also like catching chrome.

My goals this year:
1. Help my two daughters catch their first Muskies.
2. Help my wife catch a decent Muskie.
3. Have at least four people catch their personal best fish in my boat this year. (Been three a year lately.)
4. Personnally catch more than one Muskie on a lure other than a spinner bait.
5. (Related to 4.) Spend at least 10% of fishing time throwing a bait other than a spinner bait.
6. Take more fish pictures.

A few of my goals are:
1. get my oldest daughter her first musky (she's going to be 4 in June and is pumped to fish more this year).
2. Get my wife and both daughters out in the boat more this year since they are both manageable (as manageable as young girls can be).
3. Get my dad a fish that makes him shake.
4. Get Hopeful out in the boat some more and see if we can keep our streak alive.

Beyond that, hope to have another good year guiding and put lots of smiles on peoples faces.

Get a fish in the June Jam Tournament
Go back, and find that PB that got off 10 feet from the boat last year on vacation.
Target some Tiger lakes, as they are smaller and less busy than the pure strain lakes.

If you have as much fun fishing with your females as I do golfing with mine, you're going to have a hell of a year. Last summer was the best of my life.
