| Once again quite a few new baits have hit the market since last year. Although none of them are going to be the "magic lure" that catches fish every cast. I've got a good starter collection of about 300 lures and my lure buying is starting to slow down. I realize I could use to get a bunch of different colors... but, For a new and different lure what do you guys suggest? by the way, the livid fish and shadillac are already on my list, but what am I missing?

I also wouldn't mind adding a 7.5" soft tail Phantom either. Other than that just been adding some proven lures to the box especially cranks. Just gotta love cranks and jerkbaits. |

| At fleet farm today I took a walk through the musky section and they didn't have much up yet but I did notice a few new things. Bait Rigs has a new viper 2 bucktail that has dbl 10 blades with cool baitfish imagery on them. They also seem to be much shorter than a DCG - maybe 8"? Interesting though. Then there were two new dbl bladed bucktails, a spinnerbait, and a shaky bait from northland tackle. |

| For me this year...
"2010 Must Have Lure"
A wet lure.
Meaning. I have enough tools in the toolbox...I just need time to get out to get them wet. That's the only way I'll catch fish... |
|
|
|
| Mack, I guess I agree with you there. It's not so much that I need more lures, but that's the fun part when I can't be fishing... expanding my collection. Now that I've had a few years to look back at some of the original baits I bought when I began musky fishing I don't know what I was thinking. For all of us, it takes a little time to find out what works for you, your lakes, etc... either that or it just takes time to build confidence with each bait you've got.
Anyways, I always like new lures! |

The best lures are the ones that get hit so often that you eventually have to replace them - no matter how much you want to keep on throwing them.

| There are a few new ideas out there, or at least a few alterations to old ideas. One new bait I'm exited to use this season is the Shadzilla from WaterWolf Lures. A 9 1/2" hollow body Swimbait. It has awesome action with a strong internal harness that you can easily put replacement bodies on.
These baits are hand dipped and air brushed and are not mass produced. Big Wood will be the only retailer in the U.S. to carry these new baits. I believe that the guys who try them will be doing some damage this season!

Kyle, those look sweet. Is it a shallow runner?
These baits will run 3 to 10 feet deep while casting. The cool thing about the Shadzilla is that, there is about a 1 1/2 inch opening on top where that dorsal fin is, so you can easily take out the harness and put in whatever you want. You could use a single hook on top with no weight for a lighter and more weedless presentation. Or you could add weight to the internal harness to stay deeper in the water column. I also carry just the bodies with no hooks or harness in them.

| Yeah, when is Steve going to get those in stores around here? I'm sure Antigo Fleet Farm will be one of the first to get them. As they've always carried a big supply of suick tackle. Then again, I drive right by there every day... could probably stop and talk to Steve and see if he's got any show colors left.

I too tested a prototype of this last year. I'd post a pic of it but I still haven't figured out how to yet. I might be getting some more of these today. |

Location: Maple Grove, MN | This year I ended up adding nothing but more spinner baits. I've added some more CJs (my favorite) and a variety of other spinner baits like Candy Spins, Grinders, and large Rad Dogs. I even picked up a super-sizer called a "Bling" spinner bait. The Candy Spins are for the kids and the larger ones are for probing the deep water when I can't find them in the shallows.
I will still mostly throw CJs, but it doesn't hurt to be versatile.

| Shadillacs for sure. I saw Nate build them from start to finish, and he poured his heart into the mold. Solid construction, and you can cast it as well as troll it. Nate makes some great lures, and as soon as school is over, he has several great ideas that are going to turn into lures. You know when you pick them up, that they will hold up and will have action to put fish in the boat.

| Bought way more new baits this spring than expected (big surprise .. LOL). Couldn't resist buying a bunch of custom color mag dawgs at the show (especially the shallow pounder). Added some Krave (regulars & Jr), bunch of new Lee Lures, and some rubber hairy baits.
Most unique new lure I picked up has to be the Rubber Hairy - Twisted Tulibee.
I almost picked up one of the monster sized Phantoms. Those things are awesome, but I just could not justify the cost (I think it was $50) |

Location: Stevens Point/Sheboygan Wisconsin | I second what "sodaksker" said. One of Larry D's "whopper ploppers." On his site he says that he will be selling them retail and wants to build up a stockpile before turning them loose on the market. If I remember correctly he said about mid-summer they would be out.

Location: Maple Grove, MN | CJs are very high quality spinner baits made by one of the best fishermen in the game. They come in a number of sizes, colors, and blade configurations. The models vary somewhat, but they are generally built with relatively short arms to go through cabbage and reeds and are also made with very good components. Ball bearing swivels (not barrels), super strong wire that can be bent back into shape many times, good hooks, and unique color patterns. They also come with either hair or skirts.
They are by far my favorite and most productive lures. I carry at least 25 of them at all times and the only ones that aren't all pounded are the ones that haven't seen much water time. They stand up well and we generally throw them until the hair or skirts are about gone. I have several of them with over a dozen Muskie catches each.
We use them as search lures, but also as finess lures when we want to probe specific areas like shallow weed beds, boulders, and inside and outside weed edges. As with all spinner baits, lure location is key. Let them drop down to the cover and hang on!
