I just heard that when the new MN fishing regs come out in March. All the confusing wording about 12" suckers is gone. Thanks to all who made this happen.

Gone: meaning any size sucker can be used? Happy Hooker and many Twin Cities chapter members will be crushed!

DJS, we don't care what size suckers you use, we just got the DNR to clarify the law, so that everyone woud know the law. If you choose to break the law that is your choice. Twin cities doesn't have any stance on sucker size, just obey the law

Note that people in the TC Chapter were some of the ones helping to get this clarified. Not sure where this issue came up with TC Chapter being problem, but a lot of us use suckers and enjoy it. I, along with many others, wanted to know what the DNR law was to help me either avoid getting a big fine or know that I was taking my chances and if I were to get caught, what the consequences were. It was a gray area in the law that is now being corrected. As long as people are sucker fishing so it is safe for the fish, that is all I personally care about, which I think anyone on this site would agree with.

Muskyjim I could not agree more! The old wording was beyond confusing for seasoned veterans who make it a priority to observe the law let alone your weekend guy who doesn't have time to read the Rules and Regulations book 10 times trying to make heads or tails of it. Again thanks to the Twin Cities chapter and everyone else who worked to correct this.

I suggest waiting until the book is out to know exactly what the new ruling says. It is my understanding that sucker size limitations are being eliminated though.

A sucker over 12 inches long?

My kids got some big suckers like that at the MN Zoo. Sticky things when they get so big. Can't hardly put them down so I ended up carrying two suckers around much of the morning.

That would be great, but it was my understanding that they were clearing up the verbage on the quick strike rigs. I beleive before if you had 2 or more set of hooks you had to have a blade in front of the sucker to be legal.

So it looks like we have 2 votes for the 12" size limitation being removed and 1 vote for the quick strike rig verbage being cleared up, crystal clear as always. LOL

I believe the verbage will be something like this.

Suckers

larger than 12" may only be transported alive if bought from a licensed

aquaculture facility. Person must have valid receipt from facility on their

person.

DJS never said what they stated, you must love twister. The had talked about clearing up quickstrike verbage, I have heard nothing about changing regs on sucker size lenght. Just went to there website, the PDF is still for 2009 that license does not expire to 2/28/10. If really want to know what the 2010 regs are why don't you go down and get a copy and post them then we will know. I am not to worried, it is still just under 4 months to opener for most of us here in MN. Then that will make every "Crystal Clear" for You, then you will sleep better.

Jim if those are the new reg, wonder what it take to licensed auaculture facility?

To my knowledge there isn't anything being changed with the sucker laws. That's not to say there isn't something going on, but usually I hear about it.

The quick strike language should be cleared up for 2010 (should have in 2009 but that's another story). This is something that has been in the works for a few years now.

Clear up the quick strike language just in time for use with suckers that are to small to be fished effectively with quick strike rigs, perfect!

You won't see me putting suckers on my line. We had the Muskies really going the day after Thanksgiving on spinner baits. Slow rolled spinner baits that is. Six Muskies in one day. Priceless.

I got a letter from the DNR yesterday concerning the sucker issue. The language for using 12"+ suckers will be changed. I'm not sure if it'll be in the new book (probably not) but it is in the works. If it isn't effective for 2010 it should be in 2011.

The language regarding the use of suckers larger than 12" in the 2010 Minnesota Fishing Regulations is as follows: Suckers larger than 12" may only be transported alive if bought from a licensed aquaculture facility. Person must have a valid receipt from the facility on their person.

The following passage appears on the North Central Regional Aquaculture website:Aquaculture farm licenses are required to raise aquatic animals for sale. Various endorsements of the aquatic farm license are also required. These include minnow dealer and retailer licenses, minnow exporting license aquatic farm vehicle endorsement, minnow dealer vehicle license, minnow retailer vehicle license, exporting minnow vehicle license, fish vendor license, sucker egg taking license, and game fish packers license.

If you want to use suckers larger than 12" go to your bait shops minnow dealer and buy them or have your bait shop get you a receipt from their minnow dealer and you are set for the sucker season.

Guys it is even easier than I thought. I just talked to my guy at the bait shop and he got a letter from the DNR saying all an angler needs is a receipt from him and they are legal to use suckers over 12". The DNR will go through the chain of possesion if they so desire to make sure everyone has the appropriate licenses. What a relief to be done with all the sub 12" sucker nonsense!
