We've caught pike, bigger bass and walleyes on quite a few different musky lures, but they are almost always an accident. I've always done much better for quantity and average size walleye and pike by targeting them with traditional pike and walleye lures than by trying to feed them oversized musky lures. Swim Whizz has been the most consistant for accidental walleyes and pike, and deeper diving cranks like Bagleys, Depth Raiders, Ernies, etc. for bigger pike work OK. Suicks catch everything as do spinnerbaits and Crane Baits in shallower water. If I need a musky sized bait to get to a certain depth level I have no problem with confidence fishing for pike, but I think you can get too large for most walleyes in a hurry. Yeah, we've all heard about 14" walleyes hitting Bull Dawgs and stuff like that but it is still an accident, not a dependable pattern.
I just picked up some 6" diving Slammers with the shad profile bodies to troll for walleyes this year at the musky show. But I wouldn't consider them my average sized musky lures, but on the small end of the size spectrum. I was going to buy a few chrome baby straight Depth Raiders for walleye trolling too but I didn't for some reason. I guess, I find it hard to feel comfortable fishing lures much longer than 6" for walleyes, as I'm looking for quantity and quality not just for a fish.
Another thing to consider is the back to belly dimension on the lures. You can get by with longer lures if they aren't too thick. We fish a lot of the biggest jointed spoonbill Rebels for walleyes and they are about 6", but thin. We caught our biggest pike on an #18 floating Rapala trolled on a Wolf River rig. We've caught both on standard jointed Depth Raiders too, but never as many as with thinner lures.

Fishing open water (suspended) muskies in N.WI, we've landed a lot of big walleyes. During a normal summer, my boat usually releases between 50 and 75 walleyes over 25". Jakes, Grandmas, Depthraiders, all seem to be in that size-zone that big walleyes prefer when they're metabolism is peaking. We tested it 4 times, ran 3 lines off one side of the boat with Thundersticks and Shadraps, the other side with muskie cranks, and caught all fish on the muskie lures. While casting deep structure like rocks, gravel humps, weed edges, we've also done very well on big walleyes. I wrote an article for Esox Angler a few years ago on the subject as well.
An interesting observation: In the 90's up until 5 years ago we would boat 1 walleye for about every 6 muskies, recently it's been the opposite. Either less muskies suspending or more big walleyes in the system, or some skew I'm not smart enough to figure out. Either way, a big fish is a big fish, and I really enjoy those big 'eyes!

I was out with a buddy when he caught a 27" walleye on a top raider in 3 fow. Also I find that using musky sized bucktails and spinnerbaits on pike only lakes seem to out-produce the standard sized pike lures when fishing pressure is high. I've been fooled by many a big bass that eat my dbl 10s after dark.

Had a lot of luck on Pike last summer casting Bucher Slopmaster into the weeds on the Gile Flowage last summer. Caught everything from 20" to 32" and maybe 1 that as a little bigger than that. My biggest Pike was a fat 36" came on a 7" suick on that same trip. Of course both of those would be considered pretty small for a summer time Musky bait.
Also caught 4 or 5 small Pike on an 8" Crane on the Pike/Round chain last September.
The biggest Largemouth I've ever caught came on a Slopmaster too.

i've caught a couple bigger walleyes from 26" to 30" on a shallow raider, giant killer eel, and 2 on a swimming joe. Its kind of sad when you reel in a 30" walleye and are bummed at first because its not a muskie.

Our Talonz Little Claws have proven to be very good at catching huge bass. 24 inch small mouth, and 27 inch Largemouth are the two biggest. We always get pike on Crane 205,s and the red head Little Claw in Crank version is a Pike Slayer. I get 50 to 70 Pike per year trolling a red head and fire perch. At 6.75 inches its a great lure for both Pike and Muskie. Pike really like lures in the 2.5 to3 mph range and that is where the Little Claw Crank is tops. Kingfisher

we were testing 11 inch woodie bottomfeeders. first fish a 29 walleye. trolling boards we catch huge smallies on 6 inch woodies in st clair. we call them suicide fish. i even caught a wayward chinook on a musky bait.

Last summer I caught a 13 in Walleye on a WA Weagle at about 3 in the morning. Set the hook and sent the bait and fish flying through the air, not sure what the fish was thinking. I also catch quite a few stupid Northerns on my Timberwolf gliders which peees me off every time! Have caught a few Largemouth on Pacemakers also. At least they don't have teeth to ruin paint jobs!

Karol,
No need to carry more than a box or three... ha ha.
Your in IN, so is my good friend John Bales, he could help you out a lot.
Walleye like any other fish can be caught on just about anything, anytime. However walleye in general can be both speed and size sensitive. The smaller walleye say under 24"-25" are definitely size sensitive. Walleye over that size will hit a big bait quite often over a smaller one when active. Below is a stringer we caught all on big crankbaits 10"+ while trolling for muskie.
"bruiser pike" will hit about any size muskie lure, so if your not getting em, there might not be large population.

This big OH bass hit a 10" perch Grandma while trolling at 4am last Aug. She was positioned on a main lake hump that topped off at 10ft adjacent to the deepest water in that section of the lake.

2 years ago, I caught a 40" muskie on a 9" Grandma. Less than 1 hour later, caught a 30" walleye on the same lure, fishing the exact same breakline.
Last season, caught a 50" ski on a Salmo Skinner. Shortly after, caught this bass. Don't remember the measurement on it.

I've had days muskie fishing where I've caught at least 10 pike. I've never caught more than three muskies in one day.
