Was just wondering what type of baits everyone likes to run early on with the cooler water temps.
Thanks Jason

i like throwing smaller bucktails with large blades so i can keep them moving slow without dragging the bottom. When i say small, i am talking 3-4" mepps etc.. Also buchertails. Where i fish when the water is cold i don't see alot of fish charging the bait. seem's if you put it in front of them slowly i get more strikes. I also use topwaters and roll them slowly.

I like spinnerbaits, bucktails, and dawgs for those few fish that don't know they are supposed to be shallow.

I have this issue with twiching early in the season, so I tie on an old 6 inch grandma lure that when given the right leader and hook combination, will very very very slowly rise and stay level in the water. Fish just smack that lure when it just sits there for a few moments, then small twich, sit for a few moments, etc. My best start to the season I have ever had I managed to put 3 fish in the boat within 20 minutes on that technique.

Mepps Musky Killers,Blue Fox Super Vibrax, and my favorite bait, the Super Shad Rap. There's something about the vibration that bait puts out when it is twitched. It's my go to bait all season long, during fronts and great in the fall when I get tired throwing some of the bigger baits. Try the Super Shad Rap,you won't regret it! Kdawg

Anything left-right / start-stop untill the water warms and they start eating straight retrieve baits. Fish seem to really like the pause in colder temps..................

Phantoms, fish sticks, one eyed willys, live action small joes, big joes.. maybe some d raiders twitched

5 and 6 inch jerk baits and 5 and 6 inch shallow minnow crankbaits, and if I get alot of follows with no takers I up size to 8 and mabe even 10 inch shallow minnow crakbaits. I have seen them wanting a meal in the spring not just a snack.

I have been running MM Huey spinnerbaits in deep water when the fish fall out of the shallows, in the shallows we hae been using ace midget fat flippers, great little jerkbaits

It may sound a bit like a smart-ass answer here, but it's not....anything goes! And if you read enough material or forums you'll find that different people do different things. Some people downsize to smaller lures. Some people don't downsize at all---and still catch fish. I've done it both ways and each have caught fish both ways. But I do slow them down---some. In the end, my go-to lures in early season are probably a bucktail and a twitch bait. But I don't burn them back to the boat. It's more of a reel-jerk retrieve with the bucktail and a snap-retrieve with the twitch bait.

guest your right everyone list their favorite bait for a reason.but it all boils down to what the day calls for and how the fish react to what your doing then adjust .i like starting with small bucktails to look for active fish.
