Is your boat outside and unobstructed to the sky?

That's more than likely your problem. Sometimes (and I stress sometimes) you can get the GPS puck to pick up the satellites in your garage, but you'll usually need to be outside.

I guess my question is how do make the HDS unit use the puck only.

I could be remembering this incorrectly, but I thought you needed the 4000 for the HDS units.

I was gonna say that, but don't know for sure, so I held my tongue, but I thought that too. Or it may just be that you need the 4000 for the HDS' "optimum" performance; the faster refresh rate and lower distance error. I know the 4000 is faster and more accurate than the internal antenna.

I have my HDS7 mounted in the dash on my Ranger 1860 with full wind screen and had zero problems with it last year staying locked on.

You need to get the boat outside. And yes, you can use the LGC-3000 with the HDS units.
