I type this with a heavy heart. One of the true pioneers of our sport, Jack Burns, has passed away. I just received a call from a friend informing me of the news. Please keep Jack, his wife Mary and his Family/friends in your prayers. Jack will be missed by many.

Thoughts and prayers are with his family and wife.  Jack was  a true class act and I enjoyed the brief time that I got to know this great man.  He was a great musky man, but a much better person.  There is a great hole left with his passing.

Just got off the phone with Jerry Sondag, who was kind enough to take the time and call me and pass on this terrible news. Jack was good man, he gave me my start writing for a fishing magazine. He was very smart and very kind, one of the 'old guard' that pioneered this sport we all love. God speed...

Hi -

Jack was killed in an accident over the weekend.

Even writing the words brings me to tears right now. It's just terribly sad.

Jack was a great muskie fisherman. He was a better man. He was my best friend, and I am devastated by his loss.

As of right now there have not been any arrangements made, but when there are, I'll try to communicate that to his many friends in the muskie world.

In the meantime, please keep Mary and the rest of Jack's family in your thoughts and prayers.

What a blow to the muskie community. My thoughts go out to everyone around him, especially family and friends.

Jack also gave me my first start in writing some ten years ago. What an honor it was to be asked by him to write for what I believe was a true masterpiece in musky education.

For those of you that didn't know Jack, he was a most humble man. A man that was just starting to enjoy his retirement, spending every moment he could fishing with friends.

Thank you Jack for what you gave to others. You will be long remembered.

We started Esox Angler with Jack as our editor. He was a simple choice for that. He was a real talent in his role at EA and of course his fishing was legendary. He was the best I ever saw at his craft.

This is devastating news. I learned a lot from Jack about fishing and life. I will miss him greatly.

Very sad. A tragic loss to his friends and family most of all.

Jack was a great guy who was putting in his dues before most of us knew what a muskie was.

He was the "Real Deal".

I first heard of Jack Burns in the pages of the Outdoor News. When I first started muskie fishing I looked forward to his many articles. My Dad actually used to cut them out and put them in a 3 ring binder. I wonder if he still has it.......

I didn't know Jack that well, but definately considered him a friend. He gave me my shot as well writing for the magazine, and I'll always remember and be thankful for that.

I knew him as a man of good character and integrity, a quiet leader with true conviction. He was also a straight shooter who would tell you exactly what he thought, even it was going to ruffle your feathers a bit. We could all learn something from his memory. I respected him a lot.

Many blessing go out to Mary and the rest of their family.

I'm devastated! My best fishing buddy for the past 20 years! Just looked and we had 23 days scheduled for 2010. I doubt that I'll get over this very soon. We've spent lots of time together and had some great times. Please keep his wife Mary in your prayers.

Very sad!

Well it’s taken a bit to settle in…

Jack Burn’s was one of the Greatest Guys I’ve ever had the privilege to work with over the many years of being in and around the fishing industry. He was loaded with passion and opinion... I respect that in a man like Jack; especially when it is backed with wisdom and intellect.

I owe Jack a great deal of “Thanks”… while working with him at Esox Angler over the last many years; both he and Rob Kimm really helped EA mass together one of the finest groups of writers that has ever been assembled for our sport.
But, what I really owe Jack for… was his lessons in ethics and humility… Though it would make him Red in the Face he would usually take the time to explain how he saw things slightly different than I… Only a real friend will do that for you; someone with passion… Jack would… Jack Burns was my friend.

My heart goes out to Mary and the rest of his family,

Tragedy. I cant say much, ive only read a little bit of his stuff. But from what ive collected from the kind things you all have said, he was a legendary fisherman and and even better human being. I will certainly keep my eyes open if I ever see his name on an article. My thoughts go out to his family/friends

I have know Jack for many years. We attended De La Salle high school at the same time. He was truly a pioneer in the muskie world. We talked at the Operation Muskie outing last year and vowed to share a boat together. Jack recently retired and was looking forward to a great time with his wife Mary. He will be missed. Rest in peace Jack Burns. St. John Baptist De La Salle prayer for us. Amen, Sorry Robb Kimm I know he was your best friend.

Sad news indeed my prayers go out to Jack's wife Mary and all his friends and family. Just last month Jack graciously agreed to be our Fox River Valley Chapter 39 MI keynote speaker for January 2012 and as an avid snowmobiler I can say this is just a horrible tragedy for us all and musky fishing has lost the very best musky lake explorer ever.

So sad. I learned quite a bit from the man, through his work, and discussions. Very nice dude, and pointed in what he stood for, namely family, friends and fish. My heart goes out to his wife, fam, and closest buds.

GULP!!!! My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. He actually yelled at me for calling him "Sir" at a show many years ago. I still unwittingly regarded him as "Sir" in future meetings without the scolding. Hopefully he took this as a compliment for what he has done for our sport and from us as followers of his teachings.

this is very sad and tragic news. I had the honor and privellidge of fishing with Jack for a day and a half at Opertation Musky 1, and he had a profound impact on me not only with his knowledge but with his willingness to share it. he answered every one of my 100 plus fishing questions but the true pleasure was just getting to know him. My prayers go out to his family and friends, the world seems like a lesser place today.

I had gotten to know Jack over the last few years at Operation Muskie, and we have lost a good one. Without fail, any vet that went out in the boat with Jack returned talking about everything he had learned. He was a true teacher and pioneer in our madness and will be deeply missed.

Very sad days!!!

I met Jack in 1990 on LOTW. We became freinds in 1991 while I working for Paul and Greg Thorne. Since then through 2006 we fished about 60 to 90 days per year all over MN and Ont. There are two men in my life that have had a major impact on me, My own Father and Jack. I love him like a father.

We did not have a great deal of contact the past four years, but we did sit down last Monday evening for a beer. I am very grateful for that evening and all the times.

Wow, this is really a shock. I was scheduled to fish with him this fall and was really looking forward to it. After reading all these tributes I realize how fortune I would have been and what a loss this for all. Especially his family to lose a husband at such a young age. It's hard to know the right think to say at a time like this.

I read esox angler and Mr. Burns's Editors Notes plenty of times. His writing was terrific, and the magazine was what it was because of his passion for his work. While losing the magazine was a blow to the community, it does not compare to the heavy loss we feel for this sad loss. I never met him, but I know a little about what a terrific ambassador from reading Esox all those years. My heartfelt condolences to his family and fishing buddies.

Like several other people here on the boards, Jack helped me get my foot in the door in regard to writing for fishing publications. I remember the first article I submitted to Jack kind of challenged some of the views of several of the other big name EA writers at the time. I never thought Jack would print it. To my surprise, Jack actually said he liked the piece and encouaged me to write more.

Thanks Jack for your inspiration.

What a shock to hear the news...

We emailed back and forth a few weeks ago and talked about a number of things including working together for 2 1/2 years at EA magazine, family, friends and of course the 2010 Muskie season. I respect how passionate he was about his role as an Editor and his love for the outdoors and Muskie fishing...Remembering how much fun the edit sessions were on the phone, listening to he and assoc. editor Rob Kimm debate about if a sentence needed an comma, dash or neither was alot of fun. The chats we had after business was done about sports, fishing and life will leave a lasting impression.

My son and I fished a half day with Jack on LOTW a few years ago, watching him work a spot, run a spinnerbait and enjoy every second on the water was a privilege.

Enjoy your new waters Jack...No east winds, backlashes and more 'fiddles' than you have ever seen!.

You will be missed.

dear Rob, as maybe you know myself, my wife Karen and 2 sons are in Stockholm as in Sweden, we have been living here since 2007. I have been able to head back to MN A FEW TIMES. I was not in the states from May 2009 till March of 2010 so I DIDNT fish LOW at all in 2009. I HEARD of Jacks passing 2 days after he died. I AM WRITING to express my deepest condolences to you. I KNOW YOU WERE LIKE BROTHERS. GOOD WITH A CHAINSAW but still bad with computers. When I WAS IN TOWN LAST MONTH i PHONED Mary and left her a message .PLEASE give her all my love. There isnt a day that goes by Rob that I dont think of JACK. AS you know very well words fail to evoke ones feelings about Jack. I really didnt get to know Jack and Don Bownik who I STILL THINK about untill maybe 1987 or so when we got the DFDB going and I WAS INCLUDED ON SOME TRIPS TO Clearwater. Later I SPENT a bit more time with Jack and Mary doing a bit of tree work and being included in a few fall LOW lunge triips. I felt so special whenever I GOT TO FISH With JACK. HE was so focused and it was all about the resource and keeping it strong. WHENEVER he stuck a big fish and I WAS fortunate to net 2 big ones for him it waas so so so very cool. the last time I SAW HIM WAS October, late in 2009 I caught a 52 inch fish west of Miles. in a spot I never fished before I AM sorry it was 2008, by my fricken skills are so poor on the computer that I cant find the button to go back to the 2009 i typed in. anyhow I WAS OVER AT HIS AND mARYS cabin that evening and told him the spot. My only hope is that last year maybe Jack went out to that spot and caught a 53. My only wish is that I WOULD HAVE HAD MORE spots to give him but Jack knew thousands more of them than I DID. well Rob the wind just went out of me again. PLEASE GIVE MY LOVE TO MARY and one of these days or years Rob i hope our paths will cross again and maybe we could fish on LOW AND THINK of JACK. SINCERELY Mark Johnson .
