Wasn't long after I left the good old northwoods when I realized how blessed I was to live in Oneida County. I stopped spending all my time on the water thanks to an actual nice example of the fairer sex, about a year or so ago..and wow that can mess with your head. I am starting to conclude that all that time spent chasing the white whale was absolutely insane! Same goes with fishing through the winter This lack of clear water, to me water in general....doubling your chances at hitting a "cyclist" every time you drag your rig around....all this noise...TRAINS!?!...ok, ok, ok so maybe it's the lack of space to bring all the arsenal down more than anything...but I am going to be down here through our degrees and was wondering if getting back into steady ski chasing down here would actually send me backwards. I am not asking if I have a chance at catching or seeing trophy sized fish down here, not at all..I am more curious to hear from others on the site who have pounded the water from the first day possible who have had to take on geographic location changes or just had to stop fishing to move on with non fishing things. I never thought that was possible..still kinda hoping it isn't!

Okay, I'll take a crack at this one, but first let me ask, are you related to a guy named Fenner? Anyhow, from your username, I'm thinking you moved to the Point area and therefore have good access to the WI River. It is a great fishery and there are a few outstanding guides that can get you started. Hooksetters in Mosinee would be the place I'd start. Trophy potential, absolutely!

The whole WI river system in the Point area (both north, south and right in town)is great ski water both in the 'river' sections as well as the 'lake' sections. Stevens Point Flowage and Lake DuBay both hold good populations of skis with a fair chance at a biggie. In addition, one of the local SP musky clubs holds a tournament on the SP Flowage every year in early September.

During my college days in Point, I and my friends caught a fair number of skis up to the 25 pound range while jig fishing from shore for walleyes and smallies all up and down the river through that whole general area. If one was targeting muskies, I would believe you should do just fine from the number we caught incidentally.

LOP... Move on with non fishing things. Fishiong isn't going anywhere, Msukies aren;t going anywhere, they'll still be there long after all of us are dead. There ain;t nothin bette rthan the love of a good woman.

Now... You had to move from Oneida down to Point... I'm laughing inside, man. I live in the Chicago Suburbs. The closest musie to me is over an hour away, and that's the kind of muskie fishing that you'd look at and think... "No way. Get me out of here. I don't care if there's 50 POUNDERS in here, my life is in danger just being on this lake. And it's not even a lake, it's a sewer!!!!"

There are more important things in life than muskie fishing, and a whole lot of them. Going from where you were to where you are might be an adjustment, but you can catch quality muskies in several places within an hour of where you are. Even those of us who have to go an hour or two or even more to find quality muskie fishing find a way to get there and we find a way to chase the stupid green fish. You don' even have to work that hard to do that, because they are still basically in your back yard.

Several guides/anglers in that area do quite well on big muskies. The Hooksetters guys as mentioned, as well as Todd Forcier put a lot of nice fish in the net. Central Wisconsin is very under-rated for all species of fish, including walleyes, catfish, big pike, big smallies, panfish, and on and on. Plus the majority of the WI River is very scenic. Not a bad place to be stuck living!

Transfer to Bemidji State, then you will think how you could ever live in Oneida County again.  PointerPride used to tell anyone and everyone where he muskie fished in Point, ask him.

Actually, I would bet that this situation isn't all that out of the norm. Sort of going through that myself right now. About a year and a half ago I realized that getting back in shape (losing 50lbs to start) and getting back into sports was something I had to do NOW, if not soon, or the chances of ever doing that were going to be getting slimmer and slimmer if not entirely possible. SO, I got serious about my diet, started going to the gym (luckily there is a workout facility AT my work), and even started messing around playing some open gym volleyball. Weight started coming off, I began to actually find lifting weights to be FUN, and the competitive juices started flowing when I was playing VBall.

Flash forward to now: I've lost 40lbs, I feel about 1000% better physically, and I'm getting closer and closer to how I could play when I was in my late-teens/early 20s. To others, that may seem stupid, but to me it's pretty cool. I play in two leagues, do open gym on Sunday mornings, and might have found a highly competitive traveling men's vball club that I'll get to play with.

So that's a pretty big chunk of time there. I work like everyone else, 45-50hrs a week in a relatively high-stress job. I have a wife who I love spending time with. But, I have a $28K boat in my garage with $10K worth of gear ready for muskies, salmon, bass and whatevers. To fish muskies I either drive an hour to the wonderful Fox Chain of Lakes, it's 45 minutes to chase salmon, or 2-6hr drive for any decent muskie chances. So, more big chunks of time.

The only way to balance fishing/volleyball/wife and work is to become independently wealthy which would give me back 45-50hrs a week. However, I haven't found a legal means by which this is going to come to me. Come to think of it, I haven't found an ILLEGAL means to do so either. So, do I cram fishing/volleyball/work/wife all together? Great idea, but too much of the non-wife fun = lots of fishing, playing vball obsessively, but work suffers and wife gets less than happy. Work lots/play ball/keep wife happy = less fishing time. Cut out vball/keep to working/make wife happy = fat/lazy/unhappy.

Just got an invite to go to Phoenix, AZ for VBall "Nationals" which sounds like a blast, but it's June 2nd (my birthday) which I have ALWAYS spent fishing up north with the Worralls and wife or in Indiana fishing with the boys. But if I don't go to Nationals, that team will probably dump me for the future.....

So, I guess striking that balance remains a bit tough....maybe I'll put fishing on the back burner (while still doing it) for 4-5 years. By then my shoulder and back will be either totally burnt out or frankenstein-like monstrosities of medical science and technology. Fishing will always be there. The boat will be there as long as I make the payments (meaning I also NEED to keep working for this and other reasons). Muskie fishing is getting better across the range of muskie fisheries, so no reason to rush NOW while something more magical is happening....
