Location: Perryville, MO | The Cowgirl thread got me thinking...just like it was said, most of us use the same "go to" or confidence baits 90% of the time. Tackle boxes full nonetheless, we throw the same bait again and again. Time of year, conditions, body of water, surely come into play. But still we turn to our confidence bait. What five baits could you not live without? All your tackle gets burned up in a fire and you only have $100 dollars to replace baits (God forbid that to ever happen to any one of us). What are you buying? |

I could pretty much fish with those 6 baits and it would cover 90% of my fishing. Might need a few colors depending on where I was, but I could get by with what's listed above.

DC10 - lemonhead
Spinnerbait (simms, grim reaper, or nutbuster...still kinda undecided)- white
Mag Dawg - black/orange
10" weighted Suick - black
Baby Shallowraider - white
BTW I suspect that having tons of lures isn't as bad an occurence as guys sometimes make it sound...I'm thinking that's where the learning curve is developed for one's top five...after you develop what really works, you may look back and question "why do I have all these that I don't use?", but it's precisely how you learned which one's are most effective in your situation for how you fish them...isn't that how and why the "buy/trade forum" works?...guys aren't getting rid of just junky lures...but lures that no longer fit their top tier... so feel free to sell me the one's you're not using lol.
Anyway, the lists are helpful for me as the learning curve remains steep...thanks. |

Really been quite interesting.

I didn't know you wanted spring and fall.
Didn't necessarily...but Tim probably has his priorities a little straighter than the rest of us...figures he'll come up with another $100 before the season changes...actually the $100 part of question really wasn't important...most curious about what guys throw 90% of the time...another thread suggested that most of us rely on just a few baits...figured 5 to 6 would make for interesting consideration. |

Location: Perryville, MO | Well I suppose there's no terrible surprise as I've put together a bit of a composite. Lots of baits so I may have made a mistake or two (as I did this in a short amount of time).
1. Dawgs 31 (pounders - 5, regs - 12, mag -14)
2. Suicks 27 (9" & 10" were mentioned, most weighted, many not specified)
3. Cowgirls 26 (5 were super models)
4. Topraiders 19
5. Weagle 15
6. Phantom 11
7. Double10 9 (not specified)
8. Jakes 8 (mostly 10")
Curly Sue 8
9. Depthraider 7
10.Gerry's Girl 6
Pacemaker 6
Believer 6 (different sizes mentioned)
Shallow Invader 6
11.Mepps Inline 5
Chopper 5
Slammer Twitchbait 5
Hellhound 5
11. 3-4 lists
Hawgteaser, Dream Catcher, Creeper (generic), Triple D, Shumway Flasher, Red October Tubes, One-eyed Willy, Shallowraider, Crane cranks (different models), Wades Wobbler, Grandma (different sizes).
Again this may be a bit rough in terms of numbers. Several people, of course, mentioned suckers as well.

Great thread, thanks to everyone who posted. As a rookie this info will save me a lot of money.
just remember that a the majority lure's triggering ability is done by the Indian, not the arrow. So you still need to buy everything and see what YOU can make a lazy fish bite on! In the right hands, a manta, say for example, is deadly...in average hands it's very mediocre...same goes for lots of jerks and cranks! |

Location: Perryville, MO | I absolutely appreciate longNtoothy's advice. I'm still a rookie to ski's, but definitely can relate from other fishing experiences. With a texas rig or caolina rig I can trigger bass to bite just about anywhere, but my partner would go fishless. His cranks and my cranks are never the same make, though we've fished together alot of years. May look exactly the same, same profile, same color, same depth range, but he gets action from lures I just can't and vice versa. Confidence and the intracacies of working a particular bait for sure (it can't just be luck...it's happened just way too many times for there not to be a more substantial explanation).
That said, I think the list will help me as well as other rookies to narrow the search for lures that work for the particular way each individual fishes them. Still, no doubt I'm gonna be "muskie stupid" for a while like everyone else until the learning curve levels off a bit. Guess that's just part of the process. I'll enjoy the ride and pray my wife doesn't divorce me thru the process. |
