Is this a must anytime or only when you are trying to paint quickly?

Most do not require heat setting if you are not in a hurry. Heat is better but some still want heat (each color can be different) and dry, I am talking waterbased. You still need to keep it warmer than oil based and humidity down. So those hot humid summer days do not work well.

i heat set all of mine, you dont half too, but it works better and faster. my wifes old hair dryer works fine, low air, high heat. I like to dry them so I can see coverage better, and what the finished version of all the colors i mix together look like when they are dry.
