Suspended fish at night.

Hi folks,

I keep reading about how fishing for suspended fish is virtually an untapped fishery. Late last year,I dedicated myself to doing much more of this type of fishing, and I have met with some success. I also have been reading alot lately about night fishing. This is something I have been doing for some time now. My question is this:

Has anyone fished for suspended fish at night? I tried this for the first time last weekend and my boat partner lost one at 9:30 in 30 feet of water, but that was the only action. We fished until midnight on a small clar water lake that gets alot of fishing pressure but no boating traffic as it's a no wake lake.

Does anybody else do this successfully, or is this a waste of time? I think I might be on to a pattern that could up my catch rate here, but I haven't had enough success to be sure.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Muskies to all.....Pat

From personal experience I have found that at night those midday suspenders still suspend however they usually move closer to structure

I've roamed the abyss after dark... and mostly catch nice walleyes. Its really cool to watch the lake "rise" after dark on your electronics.... and even "bump" baitfish with your crankbaits.... but I'm beginning to feel that you need to get your lure much closer to the fish after dark.... thus reducing the efficiency of working open water. Unless they are responding to searchbaits like bucktails or topwater... I think my time is better invested on precise structures after dark. This won't stop me from trying... but this has been my experience so far. Good Luck!!!

I have done both night and suspended fishing for the big girls with very limited to no success. However, I still think that it has great potential so I keep at it.

My question on this topic is, do the fish still stay in the weedbeds after dark? I have heard theories that after dark the weeds stop producing oxygen and start to use it up therefore the fish leave the weedbeds and deep weedlines after dark. Does this sound reasonable to you or is it so much horsehockey?

I mostly do suspended fishing, and I must tell you don't do it! [] There are no fish out in the open water at all.[;)]

As far as night fishing goes for suspendos I don't have much experience with it. I have night fished on two separate occasions with a well known guide for suspendos, and had limited success. The first time we fished from sunset to 10:00 AM the next morning with NO action at all. The second time we fished from sunset to midnight and boated only one. I do feel, however, that there is a lot of promise to fish at night for suspendos. On some lakes the baitfish really pile up close to the surface in the darkness, mostly resulting from the zooplankton and photoplankton moving up in the water column. Like JLong said it's pretty cool to see on the lake "rise" at night. I will continue to try fishing at night for those suspendos, but remember there are no fish out there![]

i fish suspendos at nite, and i agree there are no fish in the deep water at nite. they all swim to 10 feet or less- it's in their rule book- ok, maybe not, but i do pretty well at nite in the middle of nowhere. still crankin deep, just a bit slower...
