What would some good lakes be for me to try to catch numbers of fish! does'nt matter if they are 25" I just want to learn more and catch more fish, I only caught 4 muskies this summer and I spent quite a bit of time on the water. Thanks everyone and by the way my intentions are not to claim anyone's lake for my own!

If you look back a couple of threads somebody posted a list of some number lakes.

I looked back and I did not find anything on numbers lakes in mn. There was one for northern wisc. but not mn.

Is there such a thing as a good numbers lake in mn? Probably some of the smaller lakes that are consistantly stocked would be the closest thing to a numbers lake in mn.

I live in Hackensack, I see your in Grand Rapids. On weekends I would probably go pretty far depending on the weather forecast. What do you have in mind!

Never fished it but as mentioned I've heard Orange lake has a lot of smaller fish. It's 86 acres with walk-in access so I'm assuming not the easiest to get back to.

You have a lot of good lakes in your neighborhood so I would suggest pairing up with a good angler from the area and fish it with them. Maybe join your local Muskies Inc group and go out on their outtings would be my suggestion. If you wanted to come up to the GR area I will be more than happy to take you out on some lakes where I get fairly good and steady action on.

I know this wasn't exactly what you were asking for but the better I learned to fish "my waters" the numbers followed.

On page 3 under Breezy Point there is a list of lakes in MN. Not sure if their number lakes though.

I would be interested in hitting up some lakes in the GR area with you sometime, always by myself fishing and I seem to get stuck in a rut alot and it would be good to see someone who probably knows a little more than me, would'nt take much lol. I will have to look into orange lake too! I am starting to learn quite abit about a couple lakes not too far from me but experiencing difficulty with fish behavior! Thanks everyone!

there are a couple of abandoned DNR rearing ponds where a 12 plus fish day is possible but you would be hard pressed to find any over 34 inches, and you would have to use a small boat,, not close to GR area though,,Tiger lakes in the metro especially the south metro can be numbers lakes

Four Muskies in a year isn't that bad. I have known fishermen who went years between Muskies and then caught a bunch of them.

There aren't any true numbers lakes in MN that I am aware of. At least nothing like some of the WI lakes that are stocked heavily and produce consistent action due to the shear numbers of Muskies.

The DNR manages MN lakes for trophy potential. That means a lower Muskie population to give the best chance of growing trophy fish and also not impacting other game fish populations. That translates into a better chance of catching big fish, but generally will often result in catching fewer fish as well.

It seems that you have two main methods of improving your chances of catching fish:
1. Find a lake with a higher fish population. (Might require a lot of extra driving.)
2. Improve your fishing methods.

If what you want to do is increase your chances of catching Muskies, then I would recommend looking at your fishing methods. Such things as:
- More diverse lure presentations.
- Better tools such as rods, reels, and line.
- Improved boat control and learning where to locate the boat so as to fish spots most affectively.
- Learning how to read a lake and locate good fishing spots.
- Learning when certain spots are good and when they are not.
- Learning how to find and pattern Muskies.
- Improving your hook setting ability.

These things can all greatly increase your fish catch over a year of fishing and are things everyone, no matter how experienced, can improve upon.

I have found that improving my fishing methods translated into more Muskies on many lakes. Some things are simply universal about fishing no matter what lake and what species.

Good luck.

Orange lake is a 86 acre carry in lake with Shoepack strain muskies and is not stocked. It is carry in access. I don't think I have ever caught more than two in one day there. Does have good bass fishing, though. I would take you there if you like fishing out of a canoe or feel like carrying a jon boat 100 yards.

The DNR doesn't manage any of our waters to be "numbers lakes." If you want action lakes I'd go to WI where they stock up to 10x as many fish per acre as we do in MN.

HUH? 10 x as many fish?
WI DNR typically stocks muskies at a rate of .25 to 1 per acre.
There are many lakes in MN with a stocking of .25 to up to 1.5 fish per acre.
Not sure why you would think lakes are stocked any different in WI?

Herb_b those are good areas I definately need to grow in, boat control, lure presentations and reading lakes espicially, I am not sure what you mean by patterning muskies though? I know how to pattern whitetail deer but would not know where to start with a muskie!

Leech,
Stick to 2 or 3 lakes in your area and LEARN them like the back of your hand, find others in your area to fish with, and hire a guide or two on "YOUR" lakes...... It will be cheeper than going Up North for a long weekend of exploring new water, for sure.
And keep a positive attude while you learn about life, we call... Muskie Hunting !

leech
they are accessable by "drag in boat" not a big hike but no landing to launch a traiier,,,you could get by with a 12 or 14 ft boat 1 battery and a simple rearmount 36 lb trolling motor.

I really dont see you "learning" anything about muskies these are dum fish that hit spinnerbaits,,,First time we went to one of these it was common to have 3-4 different fish hit a surface prop bait on the same cast,,,again you would be lucky to get any over 34 inches,,,been a couple years since Ive been there it got old when we found no decent fish.

PM me for a local

down size your lures on the lakes you have been fishing and try to get some pike and muskies, that will help you learn about catching and releasing fish. You might even catch more muskies that way if the fish are eating smaller baits than what you would expect.Catching northerns can be fun too, hook a big one and thats as much fun as catching a muskie.

The DNR lake finder lists no musky in any of these lakes. Do you know something they don't? Especially with high numbers, you'd think they would have stumbled onto some. They're close to Leech so I can believe it, just that the DNR is saying no.

The crow wing thing was a joke that was spelled out in the next post (they're "numbered" lakes not "numbers" lakes). A joke. Get it?

dt
it was a play on words
"numbers lake"=1-2-3,,crow wing

little humor-(very little)

actually we probably should go for the crow wing chain has one of the 8 new lakes,,,it would count has one but the fish would get around

There are some others with shoepac strain but further northeast of the GRapids area.
