Going to try to make plans for this summer's trip in the next month or so. We usually go the Hayward, WI area, but I'm thinking about Vermillion, but also wondred if LOTW was worth it from the north MN side or if you needed to go the NW Angle part of MN to get to the better muskie fishing? From what I've read the south shore is mainly a Walleye fishery. Any other suggestions will be considered. Any tips on places to stay appreciated also. We don't need anything fancy.

Depend on what your goals for the trip, Vermilion is a great lake, but if you want to catch fish consistantly during daylight and not see tons of pressure, then Vermillion might not be what you want, NW has great day time bite, lots of fish 40-48. Both offer good walleye and smallie fishing.

I would definitely say two major options: the lakes within the Longville/Remer to the Grand Rapids area. Lots of different bodies of water to fish (Deer, Moose, Mississippi River, Leech, Winni, Wabedo/Little Boy Chain)

Lots of small resorts to choose from as well as camping, motels, etc. If you stay in Grand rapids, you are not all that far away from a day-trip to Vermilion Either.

Vermilion and LOW are both great choices. Hard to beat LOW on the canadian side though, that's where I would go.

Thanks guys. Of course I would like a chance at a big fish, but would rather avoid the crowds too. I will look into the smaller lakes a little more.

Vermillion has the Canada feel but not the solitude.
LOTW - MN side - don't go there to fish muskies
LOTW - NW angle or Ontario waters are where you need to be for muskies. My experience on LOTW is lots of fish 34-44 inches, I am sure it all depends on time of year.

If you are coming all the way from Iowa, i would go straight to the NW angle of LOTW.

I like vermillion for the shot of monster fish with numbers as well. lots of musky population in there. U would have most likely have to find some secondary spots away from the crowds as classics spots get hit hard or hit them right at sunrise. Lake of the woods is so big with so many spots to hit, i would go there if were me. nw angle or morson, and kenora area low is prime musky area. In my opinion really can't beat lake of the woods unless considering eagle lake ontario.
