I throw a lot of cranks on outside weedlines, points and rock reefs and have great confidence in them for the most part. My confidence really starts to fade at boatside as I have lost many fish in the 8 due to the bait blowing up on the outside turns. Couple questions, are some cranks better or worse in this situation and what are your tactics to reduce blowouts? I usually throw Salmo Skinners, 8 & 10 inch Jakes and Slammers.

I have the same problem when throwing 8" jakes. It helps if you don't go too fast, but sometimes i'm sure the fish may be wanting "fast"....so I just try do what I can with it. Don't really have much help for you, but to tell you I have the same problem. Will be interested to hear anyone elses input too.

I picked up a tip on this board last year for the Slammers. You can take pliers and bend the lip on them so it sticks straight out. I have now done that on all my Slammers and Big Games. It helps get them a little deeper, but it really helps them bite in the 8 and stay down. I also got a longer rod to help keep them down.

One thing I have found is using a shorter leader helps with control in the corners. Slow speed would help but like mentioned above speed helps. For me I throw 10” Jakes and have found that doing a circle works pretty good. If you do an “8” maybe try twitching the bait in the corners rather than pulling the bait.

Muskydeceiver, that would work too. Thanks for the tip I like that.

Curious on that Slammer/Big Game lip mod. Do you have to heat it up to get that sharp bend? For sure slowing down helps to control blowing out, but it's just happened too many times that the slow down turns the follow off. I should try doing wide circles w/cranks at boatside. Thanks for the replys, keep them coming!

No heat needed. I usually use a vise grip on top and a vise grip on the bottom. That is what seems to work best for me. I have tried pliers and needle nose as well. Just take your time. Mine don't always look the best, it usually leaves some scarring in the plastic, but the fish don't seem to mind.

As far as figure 8s go, I tend to let the situation dictate what I do, but I found myself doing more circles this year. I also lost a lot of fish's interest this summer in the 8 using cranks. Twitching it seemed to help some.

Great advise. I do the same thing. Wide circles instead of 8's.

I bent a couple of mine as well, but never tried to NOT use heat. I don't like taking the chance of the lip snapping. Just a normal lighter will get it plenty hot. It's amazing how little heat you really need.

A little caution: Not sure how much you troll, but if the bend isn't made perfect, it could make the lure run way off.

Thanks, JimtenHaaf I think there is too much risk in doing an "8".

Use a longer Rod and keep your lure deeper.
Don't slow down in the 8 or the fish may loose intrest, Also short jerks are always a good trigger.

A good tip for figuring 8'ing cranks like Jakes, Grandma's, Slammers, etc.. is to leave an extra foot of line out when you start your figure 8. Instead of just a few inches of line like you would on bucktail or other baits, leave more than a foot of line out along with the lenght of the leader and the bait will stay down and not blow out when going into and doing a fast figure 8.

Mike nailed it, Had to figure this out the hard way. I always take a quick short cast with a new lure and put it in the eight. You can only guess why I now do this.

The extra line out Mike mentioned is a must on baits like Jakes. Also, don't worry about the bait "blowing out" on the turn, but immediatley go into a very deep approach on the straight away of the 8. This will get the bait back to wiggling as normal. The more of an angle the rod is in relation to the water the better the bait will track and the less likely it will blow out.
