| I just got a new/used boat that I get to outfit with all electronics and bow mount trolling motor. I will be purchasing a Lowrance HDS 8 for the driver area (tiller boat) a Lowrance HDS 5 up front, and a Minn Kota Terrova 80lb. bow mount with Ipilot. I will also be adding the new lowrance LSS-1 downscan that I am hoping to use on the front and driver lowrance units via the network. I will be getting everything from BPS since I have been saving my points up for a while. I have a place that I think should be able to rig all the electronics for me since I am not very good with electronics. My main questions are should I bother to get the Terrova with Universal Sonar? It probably not be necessary since I will network with the driver area unit and transducer? Also, will I be able to use the downscanning on both units? Anything else as far as networking that I should know before purchasing? Thanks in advance, Tom | |

Location: Stevens Point, WI | You don't need the universal sonar for what your going to do, however, for an extra $100 it might be worth it if one of your transducers ever went out while on the water. I look at it as it's there if you need it type deal.
If your planning on just using the transom transducer for both units, you'll need to have what's called the ethernet cable. This is the yellow cable that will run unit to unit and allow you to pick which transducer you want to be read, which in your case, it will only have one option if you only have the transom transducer hooked up. As for being able to read the Downscan on your bow unit, I'm not entirely sure if you can do that since this Downscan is so new, good question though. I will find out for you from one of the Lowrance Techs.
Also, I'm not sure if Lowrance is including the t-connectors with the new HDS units or not. I think you'll have to order the t-connectors and cables separately. Any other questions, ask away.

Location: Chaska MN. | With the Terrova its a MUCH cleaner mount with the US and it works great, I looked at it last year and didn't really find a good way to run the cables down the motor. Go with the US and the AP you wont be disappointed

| As for the US on the Terrova, I may just get it and have it as a back up. I figured it could not be used along with the downscan so I was going to save the money. As for running the downscan on both units, Lowrance literature says you can run up to 3 units off it. I will be skipping the AP on the Terrova since it is basically included in the ipilot.
As for who is going to do the riggging I am open to suggestions of places in and around the Chicago suburbs (not southern suburbs). I found a place out in Cortland, IL Bob's marine does Lowrance installs and sells Alumacrafts which is what I have. Any additional cables like ethernet may be something I just get throught them. Thanks, Tom
