Location: Hastings, mn, 55033 | I signed my run of holiday lures with a gold Pilot ink pen. (One of the ones where you have to shake it 3-4 times and then press the tip down a couple times to start the ink flowing) When I dipped the test lures in the polyurethane topcoat some of the gold lettering is running.
Is there something I can use to seals the lettering that is compatible with the poly?
Any other ideas or suggestions? |

Location: Land of the Musky | I have had this happen with my Sharpie pen when I sign my lures. What I did was put a very thin piece of clear tape on top. Hard to find but if you go to the craft store or WalMart you can find cheap thin clear tape for present wrapping. I foudn the higher quality Scotch tape was actually too thick and my epoxy coating would bulge slightly where the tape was but the cheap thin tape did not. Worth a try for you if thats what is going on. Not sure the polyurathane will put a thick enough coating to hide the edges of the tape though. |

Location: Land of the Musky | Oh, I also use a spray on coating and right behind it I hit it with a hair dryer. That worked for me too but I had to get it dried very fast before the spray coating "smeared" the ink. That was a little more tricky....

Location: Hastings, mn, 55033 | Thanks for the ideas James. I thought about giving them a quick spray of poly fro ma can. Maybe I can get a really light coat on and dried quick enough out of hte spray can that it will seal it off when dipping. |

| Hi there, I used to have problems once in awhile when I applied my labels. Then I tried Krylon Acylic clear to seal the ink before applying envirotex lite. You have to do a very light fast coat & then I hit it with a hair dryer & let it dry overnight just to make sure everything is OK. Never had a problem since. Try it on a scrap piece of wood to be sure the ink you use works this way. Good luck & let us know how you remedied the problem. Ken

Location: Ohio | I use Gold and Silver gel ink pens when I sign my baits if you let this ink dry for a couple of minutes it won't smear and it doesn't bleed into the paint. I buy these pens from Hobby Lobby or Micheal's. |

| Paint pens instead of ink pens is the way to go.
I tried a Sharpie once and it ran like nuts, so I used a red one to outline gills and let it run. |

| I spray urethane automotive Paints and they sell a clear base coat for tape outs between coats etc.. I use it to shoot a little clear over the signature that dries quick before I shoot my two part clear. I am not sure if Createx sells a clear medium but I believe Auto Air sells a clear base coat as well. |

| The ink runs if there is any kind of solvent in your epoxy top coat. I use D2T and after mixing the two parts I put a thin layer over any ink before I mix acetone into my epoxy. As mentioned above there are numerous tricks to avoid the problem. |

Location: Hastings, mn, 55033 | Ended up fixing the problem by spraying several light coats of poly and then keeping the baits horizontal for a few minutes while that dried so the ink couldnt run.
The biggest trouble I was having is figuring out why the ink only ran with about half of the baits I tested. I figured if it was going to react then it would do so with all baits. So it made it a little tough trying different fixes when I wasnt entirely sure whether it was the "fix" that kept the ink from running or if it just happened to be a bait or two that the ink wouldnt have run on anyway.
I had never had a problem with ink running using D2T. Switched to the poly and it made this gold ink run about half the time, and it makes red sharpie run as well. Black sharpie is just fine, but red runs! |
