| I am in talks with a reel company in making a new reel. I am looking at getting input on what YOU would like to see in a reel and what you don't like. And were best to go to get some good input than the people that use the equipment. This reel would not be ready till the 2011 season. |

Location: branchburg NJ | first of all no plastic parts that warp after minor use. A non disengaging level wind so the heavy braid doesnt criss cross the spool.Easy maintenance and reliability. maybe this could be the reel to put an end to the relentless threads on DCG reels. :)

| Generally speaking gears are not an issue with todays reels. As for plastic there are places where plastic is better than metal, put a metal cog gear on the level wind and you will not believe how the reel will scream when it spins at 30,000rpms! |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | Gears made from brass are fine, its the size that matters, a main gear that is 40-44mm tall and a 4slot pinion, That will give the reel the POWER to bring DCG10-13 with ease. Then you could use 100mm long Power handles, with 40mm plus gears, now that is a reel. Plastic Cogs are fine. |

| *sigh*
Okay here goes...
I want a reel that is smooth, comfortable, lightweight, and solid.
I want a reel with a thumbar that doesn't stick, engage halfway, or otherwise malfunction
I want a reel with a levelwind that lasts more than a season or two, that doesn't skip or suddenly start piling line up on one side of the spool
I want a reel with an anti-reverse that works, and keeps on working
I want a reel with a big handle, that picks up a lot of line, that won't blow up from pulling double 10's
I want a reel with a a centrifugal weight system and a mechanical brake that allows me to cast a good distance with a variety of baits, and not be a backlash machine, even if I am throwing a suick on a windy day.
I want a reel that doesn't require constant tightening of nuts and screws to keep handles and such attached
I want a reel that performs well in inclement weather. That means rain, snow, sleet, and well below freezing temperatures, often in the same day.
I want a reel that works as well at the end of a season (or even two seasons?) as it did when I took it out of the box in the spring
I want a reel that can make it from May to December without needing to be taken apart, cleaned, and oiled
I want a reel that doesn't start to grind, rattle, squeak, scream, wobble, fart, etc after a season |

| I would like a reel that has a vented spool, so you could tie your braided line to it so the line would never slip. |

| I have to laugh reading some of these posts, it reminds me of what I want in a tire for my truck. I want a tire that I never need to rotate, that I can do 30 second burn outs with, that I can come to a skidding stop all the time with, that will handle 180mph without any tire noise but will also get me through 12" of jumbo mud. Oh and I want it to have a lifetime warranty and only cost $25 each. |

| Reelman... Even the cheapest tires you can find will last a season. Is that too much to ask in a reel that was supposedly designed for muskie fishing??? |

| I would like to know which company is "making" this reel, that means alot as well. There are many companys out there with a pretty bad past and track record, that come out with new reels every year and the new ones are just as bad as the older ones. Then there are companies like Shimano that make the 400TE, and simply continue to make it without change or adding "new and improved" reels to the line up. |

Location: On my favorite lake! | I would like to see both low profile reel and round reel with all metal such as titanium gears, Power handle, Drag and antireverse that don't strip out. Come in a variety of speeds. I want a reel that doesn't fail. |

| Start with a Calcutta 400. Then, change the following:
- Leave the spool wide, but make the barrel thicker. This will reduce the amount of line capacity, which will reduce superline cost. It will eliminate the need for a mono backing on the spool.
- Add a threading hole in the barrel of the spool to prevent line slippage.
- Add a power handle, but make sure it is balanced to avoid premature engaging of the reel. To tell if it is balanced, take the handle off the reel and balance it on your finger, like a seesaw/teeter totter.
- In lieu of trying to balance the handle, just have two oversize knobs on the power handle (one on each end), and it will balance itself.
- Add stronger gears to withstand twin ten bucktails.
- If you want to be crazy, add a gear shift to switch between slow and fast retrieve speeds.

| All the talk about stronger gear has me thinking of who hear has stripped gear on a reel before. Not including 6.3 Abu gears And when I say gears I mean the gears that turn the spool, not the cog gears that turn the spool. The reason I ask is that I have repaired about 20,000 reels and other than the 6.3 abu gears I can count on one hand the reels that have had gears go bad on them. Now this also does not include gears that went bad because something else broke and got caught in the gears as that will destroy any gear. Way to often regardless of the problem people think it;s the gears. |

| How about just NO PLASTIC. I hate opening a reel and finding gears made of plastic. |

| What reel has main gears made of plastic? Most all of them have the gears that turn the level wind made out of plastic and if those were made out of metal you would not believe the noise they would make on the cast. I have been involved with reels that had metal gears to turn the level wind and trust me you don't want that. |
|
|
|
| Everything they said, plus...
*Recessed reel foot
*Reel foot positioned to balance the reel better when on the rod
*Smooth, comfortable left-hand side plate for those of us who palm the reel all day (no sharp edges!)

Location: Hugo, MN | I'd like to see a 400 size Curado, in both the 6.2 and 5.0 gear ratios. Also with power handles and non-disengaging levelwind.
Also, I'd like to see a Trinidad 14 with a levelwind and auto clutch to engage the spool. Then it would need a balanced powerhandle to prevent that massive knob from engaging the spool mid-cast. I'd probably buy one or two if they made them, and sell the rest of my reels. |

| A reel that can HANDLE Musky fishing and you don't have to break the bank to own one. I have never had a reel that will hold up to the rigors of musky fishing. Just my 2 cents. |

Location: London, England | An old style 7001 with IAR and 4:1 gears would be a good start. A narrow bodied version too, like the HSN, but with 4:1 gears. Sweet!
Bigger high effieciency gears would be a definite improvement too, and if it could all be made a bit lighter I'd be a very happy bunny.
However it ended up, a left handed version is mandatory. |
