Can one fish the Detroit River with just a Michigan fishing license? or does the river require both a Canadian and Michigan license to fish it?

You need both. Mich is only good for US waters. Don't forget ID too, the US authorities have been pricks lately, even going over in Canadian waters and harassing Canadians who did not even enter US waters. Unbelievable but true. If you launch in Ontario and stay there, leave your GPS on to show your trail....

Also don't forget the differneces in laws. No guns in Canadian waters (yes, I fish armed), and I don't think Canada allows booze in the boat either....not sure on that one as I don't fish Canada nor do I drink while fishing, but I know I've read guys getting in trouble for it on the Canuck side.

Also as far as customs, as long as you only "float" in Canadian waters, you're not legally bound to report to customs. If you moor up, or even anchor in Canadian waters that counts as a visit to Canada and you're obliged to report it to customs.

does the US/Canada border go right down the middle of the Detriot River?
thanks for the information everyone. i want to be in 100% compliance with all the local rules and regulations.
Sounds like if i want to fish the river, i need to get both. I could possible stay into canada unintentionally and be in violation...??

Dear "guest" (I love guests)-
It's not being a "prick." It's them doing their job. I'm in the Coast Guard here on the lake. I'm in the helos, and not one of the "pricks" in the boats, but we're doing the same job in the air. If you had a fraction of an idea of how much illegal activity goes on on the two rivers and the lake itself you'd begin to understand, and not ignorently flame people just doing their jobs. Between smuggling of drugs, and outright national security issues it readily becomes clear as to why people are stopped and questioned in boats. I've been stopped three times at the ramp when I get back after dark. They come down and talk to me while I'm tying the boat up to go get the truck, just asking where I've been, what I'm doing and so forth. It's just their job. And without going into it more than I can on the internet, let's just say our effforts have been doubled over the last two months, and random approaches to boats, boaters, fishermen, pleasure boaters, etc have been taking place. Sorry if national security and drug enforcement interfere with your day.

And Mr. Guest, there's a chance I know you if you're down on the river, and I hope you're not Tim or Scott or one of the other fine gentlemen on the lake that fish the South end. But I gotta stand up for what we're doing on the water, and not be libeled as "pricks." You'd be surprised how many pounds of weed come over to our side in bass boats and Sea Rays in the middle of the day....and National security; well I can't tell you what we've seen attempted, but let's just say it happens and that's why they're there.

Yep, get both. I believe a non-resident license is like $67 and you can get them in a couple of places and online.

I don't know that the border goes right down the middle, but it's plainly marked on all charts and most GPS that have basemaps.

This is just the lake, but it's the pink line through the middle of the lake, so you know what you're looking for-

You do NOT need both to fish in the DR. Nice to have both, though.

If you have a good chart or chart plotter GPS, you can choose to stay on either side of the line, if you wish. I recommend, purchasing both, such you can choose an area depending on wind and water conditions. (hide in the lee if windy, or pick the water clarity you like, if too muddy or too clean)

You can purchase a daily non-resident Canadian license, and/or a non-resident Conservation license. These are a little cheaper, than the non-resident annual. You be the judge which works best for your business case. (if on a 10 day trip, get the annual, one day..get the daily - IMO)

Sorry for the strong language, but Ontario waters are outside of the US jurisdiction, especially well into Ontario. Sorry if you took offence, and thanks for your efforts in the CG

And I appologize for my strong language as well. I appreicate the appology. I went and hooked my boat up, and now I've cooled off.

As far as Ontario vs. US waters....well again, "let's just say" that when it comes to Homeland Security, it's everyone's water. There's Canadian boats on our side too; and it's an agreement the two countries have. It's just that when it comes to manpower, we're far more visible because we have so many more boats and assets out there.

Now I'm out of here. I'm going fishing! On the American side! LOL

to be totally prepared have licenses for both sides. winds and water clarity dictates where its worth fishing. as for homeland security and customs,,, many issues have been created from unsavory people. with 25 million illegal latino,s in the u.s. i can see the problems.... drugs you bet.as for authoritys being short... its not hard to imagine the last guy treated them badly. get the drift. treat them with respect,,, you will get it returned.. i live on the detroit river. since 9-11 its a far different. world.

Just do yourself a favor and get both. I fish the river as my main body of water and couldnt imagine doing it without both licences it would cut your fishing options down by over half. I've never had an issue with authorites other than a quick stop and a couple of questions.........just doing their job. I always carry my ID with me so it's never been a problem. Just remember though the Ontario MNR DOES NOT offer online licences so you need to make arrangements to get one one land. Also plan your trip well. The majority of ramps on the Mich. side of the river are closed up right now for the season. So thats something you might want to look at. When are you planning on fishing it? Let me know and I can keep you up to date, I live around 4 minutes from the launch on the Ontario side.

Good Fishin'
Tim

Tim, I know I've seen them for sale online as I was going to buy one last year online. So I did some looking and we're both right. MNR does not sell them online, but you can buy them online from a store on the American side-

That's right Lakeside will sell them on line but they aren't an "e-licence" they have to be picked up at the shop I believe. Starting in 2010 though we are supposed to be able to get an "e-licence" here in Ontario.

For Lakeside Tackle orders...

You have to get your order in before Thursday, to get your license. They send over a courier on Thursdays, to pick them up and bring them back, for a small fee. So, if you go in on a Friday to order, you won't get it until the following Thursday afternoon.

Nice service, but also remember, Canada license expires 12/31/09. May as well wait until 2010 to get your annual, assuming you are not fishing the next 14 days of December. Ontario muskie season ends on LSC 12/15/09.
