My 40 HP two stroke Johnson will troll fine for hours, but when I run 3/4 throttle accross the lake, it suddenly dies after about 15 - 30 seconds. The motor will start again without even using the choke. I replaced the plugs and fuel filter, but no improvement. Anyone have this happen before?

Does it sputter first and slowly die out over a couple seconds or does it just cut out like the key was shut off?

Hiya,

Just a quick thought of what it might be...

check your fuel line from the tank to the motor. If it is kinked, what could potentially be happening is fuel is not getting through enough to keep the motor running and it is starving, thus the sputtering, etc at higher throttle settings.

I should also ask, how old is the line or the tank? If the tank has some age, you might want to take out the fuel inlet hose in the tank to see if it has somehow become partially clogged. Some have a filter screen in the tank that can get clogged.

Just something to check...

When my outboard motor is running 3/4 throttle it shuts down quickly. The tank and hose are 1992 vintage. When this happened, I checked the hose and it wasn't pinched or kinked. It could be a screen at the fuel tank intake. Anyone think it could be ignition related?

If its shutting down quickly it could very well be ignition related. That's why I asked the question I did. Sputtering and slower is usually fuel quick and sudden electrical. I had a Merc that did that and it turned out to be a coil. It would get hot when running fast and cut out.

I had a 40 horse that would do something similar. It turned out to be the kill switch. If its like mine was, the kill switch had to be perfectly in the middle, any movement in or out it would kill. The movement of the throttle was enough to shut it off at times. Poor design IMO.

Had a similar problem with a 15HP Evinrude kicker, vintage 1990. The fuel line was eaten to pieces from the inside by the crap gas we have now and chunks were floating around loose clogging the inlet to the carb when you goosed the motor. It would troll fine but any higher rate of fuel low was a shutdown. Replaced every hose on that motor, the big motor and hoses from the tank. Never had any more fuel flow problems on that rig after that. May not be your problem, but if it has old time rubber fuel lines they need to be replaced!

This happen to a friend of mine. He had to replace the kill switch. It got a short in it. Had to take it to two dealers to finally find the problem. He just bought the part and fixed it himself at one forth the cost. He said it was easy to do.
