No one doubts European pike are bigger than ours, but there's a good chance this angler is French Canadian, which means he's only 3 to 4 feet tall.

Still a very, very nice pike. That's thick. I love big pike. Thanks for posting it.
I don't think I'd put my face that close to it either.

I don't give a flying hoot how he's holding it! Thats a #*^@ big fish, heck of a back drop as well. I'm sick and tired of hearing people B&M about "shotty pics"! You can obviously see he is struggling to hold that thing up and I think most would! Great fish

Why would you talk bad about that picture? Nobody claimed length, weight, girth, etc.. Someone simply posted a picture of a fish that is big.

And the fish's beak is in the light. It doesn't reflect as much light because of the angle. The person's face has the sun bouncing straight back at the camera. The fish's head is angled away from the camera, so the light reflects away from the camera.

It doesnt seem like he was fishing for pike, more like bass fishing or somethin with the small rods on the side of the boat.

You sir, could be my friend. Get ready for some angry PMs.

I do believe that angler is Jean Van de Velde. The bravest Frenchman who ever lived.

hi guys,
that's the full story (in english) the angler release for our small italian pike fanatics community, the angler is a friend of another member of the site.
http://pikefirst.forumfree.net/?t=41298561&st=15#entry338762832

Like you, we'd like to appreciate the full size of the fish in a better picture, but the angler is mainly a bass guy, it was fishing solo, and he did his best to safely return that beast in the water as soon as possible, and I think that's enough to respect him.
And quite franky, the last time I check on my measuring tape, 54" was a monster of a pike.

With that background, it could have been a 20 incher and it'd still be cool.

It's skin looks a lot like the skin the aliens keep hidden under cloned human skin in the new hit ABC series, "V". They're not friendly, believe me. Reptiles rarely are.

According to the angler who caught the fish, it was successfully released and was 54" long. Good enough for me! Thanks for posting the images, it's a true giant.

That is just simply one of the coolest fishing photos I have seen... The coloration is just amazing. Love the pike... Honestly didn't know one could catch trophies like that in a setting like that... I need an overseas work assignment...

Remember this 53 lb. Pike caught by Carlo Aimonetti from Lake Maggiore, Italy?  He caught two over 50 lbs. in a matter of a few weeks.  By the way, Carlo is not a small man....no crazy viewing position here.

Man those are some Hawgs! Is there any details on the fishing over there? It looks like the bow-mount is down. Did he catch it casting? What type of structure, bait fish, and what is the average size fish? Do these fish see a lot of pressure? If not, I'm sure it will be a destination for many anglers after pictures like that. I sure know I would like to experience that some day. Simply amazing scenery!

"Struggling with difficult fishing, almost no bites, I fished hard anyway as the conditions were promising (15°C water and windy weather). It was also for me the opportunity to test a new shad I developed, the tests on zanders were more than good but the ones on pike were not complete.
I was spending my time spotting a drop off between 5 and 15m on my GPS, when I saw a big detection on my Humminbird fishfinder. I retrieved the line as fast as I could and let my shad fall 10m behind the boat in order to present the bait in the right place. When I hit the bottom I knew that I was very close to the fish but I had no bite, so I tried an “extreme” movement by shaking my lure very hard (as to get rid of weed), this kind of animation lead sometimes to reaction bite…and that’s what happened. I felt a big strike and set the hook firmly…In my mind, it was a one meter fish, nice fish but not huge, so I started to reel and to “pump” the fish very quickly (I always use hard drag settings), and even get my long fluorocarbon leader into the rings. When I bent forward over the boat I saw this massive fish, maybe I stopped reeling during half a second! He took this opportunity to rush and took easily 10m of braid out of the reel. Then he came a second time to the boat, and crushed the surface…closed mouth, no way to use the fish grip. At this moment I realized that my short fluorocarbone leader in 0.61 has been completely swallowed, the teeth were rubbing the 0.30 leader, my god! I started to engage my right arm in his left gill, but the fish had a quick reaction and rushed again. He took another10m of line in a few seconds; I dipped the complete arm in the water to absorb the rush. At this time I knew that a single side-to-side movement of his head could cut my thin line, so I just took a mad decision: I set the drag to the max and started to steady winch…The pike came straight to the boat and half-opened the mouth to shake the head, but I was quicker than him and slid my fish grip on his huge claw. I hoisted this lifetime fish into the boat and gave a howl!!
The following seconds are a bit confused, I was alone on board and torn between taking tons of pictures and releasing him as soon as possible. I engaged my camera’s retarding and started to make a few pictures. Then I laid the fish over the rule, and saw an amazing 137cm!! My former record of 114cm was exploded…I took cautiously the fish and put it into the water, his tail on the right hand, my camera on the left one. After a very short fight (around 3min max and a quick picture/measuring session (2min max), he had absolutely no trouble to recover and to get back home in the deep blue waters of the lake.
The rest was just about enjoying this moment, laid on my boat’s foredeck, I drift 500m before wake up! I had much more difficulties to come back to life that he had…"

Keep in touch
