The motor runs fine at 3/4 throttle. When you open it up wide it hick ups and doesn't run full speed.

Could be plugs, or electrical. There's a module on the top of the block, same thing happened on my 1991 175. Eventually, the motor just quit running.

Maybe a power pack going?

We went out on Saturday. From the launch we tried to open it full and it did it. We got to were we wanted to fish. We opened the gas cap. We drifted for an hour. We moved to a different spot. So we opened it again and it ran fine and ran fine the rest of the day with the cap off. Any comments.

I know my 75 Merc did the same thing a few years back, would go slow but not WOT, plugs fouled
New plugs, and she ran just fine

Sounds like an air venting problem. The motor removes more gas from the tank than the air inlet can compensate for at WOT?

Had a 92 johnson that had that issue years ago. The power pack was the culprit. There were a lot of things that would make it work "better" for a little while but in the end it was the power pack. The PP is one of those known problems with Johnsons of that era.

Hiya,

My first question would be is the gas cap vented? How old is the tank you are using? I would say that if you can get a hold of a different gas cap to try or easier yet, a different tank to try, put it on and test. If the problem stops, chances are it is your tank that has the issue and somehow it is not venting correctly.

If the gas cap is vented, I am wondering if the vent has somehow gotten plugged up or gummed up from something.

If you left the cap on and run until it starts to die out, check the bulb on the fuel line...if the bulb is compacted (like everything was sucked out of it) and it works on the new tank, it's time to replace either the cap or the tank itself.

Gut instinct tells me this is not a power pack issue. If it runs well with the gas cap off, the tank is not venting.

My buddy had a deal like this a few years ago. Changed caps, changed lines, pump the bulb going down the river to run. A summer of fighting different things. He changed the power pack and all the trouble was gone.
