Location: MN | Wondering what boat/rigs people own and the vehicle they are using to tow them. Currently, I am running an old Ranger 680 tiller and towing with a 2006 Chevy TrailBlazer. Eventually I am going to upgrade my boat and I am trying to feel out what my TB could handle or if I need a new vehicle... thought I would see what everyone else is using.
Sorry if a similar post has been put up but the search function isn't working for me.

Location: Twin Cities | 01 Chevy 1/2 ton, ext cab short box, 5.3L. Boat is a 690 with a single axle trailer. I'd consider this truck underpowered and under braked to make towing this boat non-issue. It works pretty hard...
edit: we've towed this boat with a friends f150 that was two years newer with the 5.4 and it was the same result...used an F350 w/7.3 power stroke too, got the job done very well but at 12mpg, well...lame...
The 2500 duramax, now that was smooth sailing...18mpg too towing around 65mph...next purchase please.

it's on a tandem axle trailer, which is heavier to pull, but the ride is quite noticeably smoother than with the single axle trailer. surge brakes on both trailer axles really make it easy to stop, too.
the new Dodges are great trucks. when you put the hammer down, the 5.7 HEMI has got plenty of passing power even when towing the boat. it's a huge difference over the same boat behind my previous '02 5.4 Ford. you can get lost inside this truck and it's really comfortable. i do wish a locking tailgate was standard, though.
pulling the boat at 70mph it consistently gets 10.6mpg; that jumps to 13mpg if i put the cover on the boat. i was surprised it made that much difference: 20% is a LOT of gas savings on a long trip.

Sounds like a good boat cover would pay for itself in a single season. Mike, have you noticed a difference in mileage having the topper on your truck compared to an open bed? |

exactly. i paid $135 for the cover, just a standard one from Gander. it's paying itself off pretty quickly.
i haven't had a truck without a topper in years, so i can't speak to that firsthand. however, they did an episode of MythBusters about it, and used fuel flow meters on a single truck with open bed, tonneau cover, tailgate down, no tailgate, and net.
the net was the most fuel effecient, by a decent margin.

Most of my towing is less than an hours worth and on rural roads with speeds in the 45-55mph range. One thing I've noticed that makes a huge difference is knowing when to turn OFF the overdrive. When towing at speeds under 50mph I find a big gain in towability, more power and better mileage. I don't turn it on until I get to a speed where my rpm's are going stay in the 1800-2000rpm area all the time. Depending on extra load, terrain and wind I'll get 14-17mpg at 50-55mpg towing like mentioned.

I have had a ton of problems with my jeep (stalling for a year, computer chip malfunctions in the drive-train, batteries etc...) but it has finally been running well for the last 2 years. And to what Hammskie said, I think a V8 would have been a better choice.

| Mak51,
Not to get too far off the subject....I had stalling problems for an entire year - had the car in and out of dealerships 4 times and no one could figure out what the %$$% was wrong! Then my buddy told me to look the web and search the problem - there were a lot of people complaining about a certain part...so I had the dealership replace it even though they did not want to and during the process, they found that the wires connected to the "certain part" had been worn and rubbing on a screw. Every bump shorted the engine out when the wire touched the screw.
Lone Stone, is that a 115 Merc on the back? Nice boat!

I've wanted a Ranger all my life, I just always thought it would be a bass boat, untill I came down with the muskie disease. The timing wasn't perfect, but it was a good price and in VERY good shape. Just couldn't pass it up.

| SC,
You would think I would remember the name the part when they finally fixed it! LOL honestly, TPS sounds familiar. Whatever it was called, I think I was some kind of computerized pump that was in sync with the pistons etc...? It was just a part that a lot of people were talking about on discussion boards so I gave it a try.
LS, I think one of the best things about Rangers, besides being a true workhorse, is that they hold their value after many years and owners. That says a lot.
One thing I will by adding to my 680T for next season is a set of Wave Wackers -anyone use this brand on your rig?

| I ran a lot of miles up on a 96 Chevy work truck with a 4.6 Vortex and 2wd pulling my 17.5 Lund blue whale with a 115 on it. Definitely worked it some in the mountains but for the most part it had plenty of power when not in overdrive, and when I headed north, put it in OD through IN and IL, no probems. I backed that one into a bluff alongside the freeway this winter, and now have a 5.3 Eldorado and really way more power than I need. I am surprised some are having somplaints of total power with this engine? I could probably go glass on my boat, and still have excess power available. |

Location: Right Here | For those that said the 5.3 is a little underpowered, the rearend makes a HUGE difference. I have two 5.3's that pull a 21.5' Astro with a tandem axle trailer. They pull it COMPLETELY different. The Tahoe has road gears (assuming standard 3:42) in it and has to shift constantly. Our pickup has a 3:73 and pulls MUCH better. Always known that it obviously makes a difference, but I never realized how much until I owned both at the same time. I would obviously love to have 4:10's, but oh well. Something to look at for sure if you don't want a 3/4 ton or bigger for your daily driver.

| I drive 2002 ford explored v6 4.0 l it pull 15' 1990 gruumann with 20 up Johnson. Even tho it's small I had been tryin to remodel the boat interiors but I suck with wood work. ( I m welder so I have a lame excuses for it) I get 16-18 mpg with it most of water I fish is 30 mins radius from my home. Hopefully upgrade host to esox mangum or some javelin regenades if I find deal on it. May can't come much sooner. Got yelled at work from daydreaming to much. |

Location: where the fish are... | i have a 2001 ford ranger 4.0L and i towed a trailor from NC 1100 miles away tha wieghed everybit of 4500lbs and had no problems with it at all, no problems stopping starting very smooth. I towed my freinds dads 16ft monarch last summer up north and actually got better gas mileage pulling that than the 12' fischer we took up there this year. That 4.0L can easily tow 5600lbs i think thats the rating on my truck. |

I drive a 4.0L Ranger myself, but I still couldn't imagine pulling a Ranger 619. It's actually got enough power to pull it, but stopping could be scary. |

Plenty of power to pull the boat but stopping is scary. Not to sure how much longer the tranny's going to hold up to everyday towing. MPLS traffic has convinced me that i need a more capable truck for the upcoming season. |

But, it pulls it with no problem, and power to pass if needed. It has been pulled by my buddie's GMC that has the 5.3 liter and there is a BIG difference. |

| Can anyone tell me any "basic" rules as far as gas-mileage and towing and differences between a V6 and a V8. I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee and during the season, I get around 13.5 miles/gallon towing my 680T Ranger. The Jeep has about 100,000 miles and I am getting ready to buy another SUV. Just looking for some basic info such as "a V8 is better for towing because etc..." if that is the case. I know there are some newer V6's that are coming stock with 270 hp as in the Toyota 4Runner which to me is lots of power?
Thanks,
Chas Martin

Location: East Central WI | All things being equal, the V8 is the way to go, no doubt about it. Things have gotten complicated and I think there is more to it than just a V8 or V6. For instance, you can get 3 different trannys on a GMC, a 4.10, a 3.73 and a 3.5? If your always pulling something, get the 4.10, if mileage is your no. 1 priority, get the 3.5. That being said, I would certainly think a V6 would pull your boat without too much effort. If not, get one of those chips to increase horsepower. I think they are about $400+/- and I know a few guys who have them and love them. A word of caution though, I think they void warranties. |
