Hmph. Anybody have any tricks for keeping fish pinned on these lures? I lost two good fish this past weekend, in a tournament no less. Both times it was because the middle hook had fouled on the back hook. The next day I tried using a small piece of electrical tape to keep the back hook straight, but that absolutely KILLED the action. Any ideas? The bait runs great -- it's got a lot of flash, nice belly roll, and it rocks back and forth on the pause. I don't want to sacrafice the action, but losing fish because the hooks fouled together is NOT good...

Ideas?

A couple of ideas...First, try and downsize the middle/back hooks to a model that won't tangle. Secondly, if you don't want to downsize your hooks, take a piece of tubing (similar to what they use on the back of topraiders and for keeping spinnerbait trailer hooks on) and slide it over the shank of the hook. Slide the tubing over the splitring then the screw eye. Position the hook where you want, I would suggest T-ing the hook and laying it against the body. It may still tangle this way, so your best bet may be to tube the back hook and that should solve the problem. This won't effect your hooking (will definitely help it!) and your hooks shouldn't tangle now.

make sure you "t" the hooks and you can rubberband the middle hook up by running a small rubberband through the rear hook eye and taking the loops and putting one on each of the outer hooks on the middle one. that will help and wone change the weight of the bait whatsoever.. and if you hookup on it and break it just put anopther one on...bill

Eagle Claw 3x Heavy 5/0 short shank hooks almost the same weight and they have the same gap that HR baits come with.

Thanks, guys. After seeing what a bit of electrical tape did to the action, I'm not sure I want to shrink wrap any hooks. I think maybe the weight of the hooks swinging might be part of what gives it the action I am looking for. Fred, do you know what hooks are supposed to be on the bait to begin with?

Jim Wilson switched around a bit with the hooks but in the early part of 200 he was using the 974 Eagle Claw that I was telling you about in the email. You are right to some degree the hook swing does add to belly roll in the bait.
