2004/V-max 200HP with 550hrs. seems to be smoking a bit more lately.
It still runs great (68MPH) and I haven't changed the plugs since last Fall.
It only smokes when cold.............Is there a problem ?

Thanks, Jerome

I'd not worry about it. When I had my 200 VMAX, I learned that smoke was a fact of life warming up, and I'd see it now and then even when I didn't expect it. Unless it's billowing out or getting excessive, chalk it up to being a two stroke. That's my take at least, which is far from scientific or carrying any weight.

I would be alot more concerned if it wasn't smoking or the smoking got less, at least you know it is getting oil. I would maybe try some new plugs.

Plus the cold temps show more evaporation steam making the exhaust look 'thicker'.

Hi Jerome,

I think Steve Worrall hit the nail on the head. The colder temps will mean more vapor in the exhaust...

I would also ask what oil you are running...I would assume full synthetic, but if it is not, you might find a bit less smoke going that route. Not sure if the V-max series takes the same oil as a normal 2 stroke, but I believe amsoil makes a higher performance oil above their HP injector oil. The HP injector oil is really light on the smoke...burns really clean all the time, even trolling.

just something to think about....

Thanks guys,
I run Yamaha lube 70% of the time, otherwise its Amsoil.
Not filing plugs, just a bit more smoke than normal.....Worrall may have hit the nail on the head............Can he see that good at his age ? LOL.....

I hear he can, but that may just be a rumor.
