i am going to winterize my boat here in minnesota this fall/winter and was wondering what low temps do i have to be worried about when my boat is outside this fall. I don't want to ruin the engine or anything, but know alot of guys go and fish all the way up to breakin the ice on the lakes. am looking to fish late this season so any help as to what guys do and what to be aware of would be greatly apprecciated

At 32 degrees the water freezes. If you have drained the water in your lower unit, you should be fine prior to winterizing. So when pulling out of the ramp, especially if the air is 32 degrees or below, you should let you motor sit verticle to allow any water in the motor to drain completely out. Not doing this, the water in the lower unit might freeze and crack the lower unit case. Keep in mind that you should be doing this every time you pull out, as not transfer water from one lake to another.

This might be a little extreme but I'm a-retentive about some things - I have a small portable air tank that I fill with my main compressor. In late fall after I'm done fishing I keep the motor vertical as long as possible after pulling it out, I then blow air into the LU water intakes. I get every drop out possible.

I don't think that blowing out the lower unit is necessary if you have a few drops in the lower unit its ok. As long as you don't have enough in there to expand, cracking the unit (that's what you are trying to prevent). If you just have a few drops and it freezes, they will thaw when you place the motor into the lake the next time out.
